Considering parting with my 6-284 barrel

I can't get my Savage small shank 26" 8 twist Shilen barrel to shoot under .5 MOA. So I am considering selling the barrel along with 300 pieces of brass, a 6.5-284 Redding neck die and a Lee 6-284 two die set. I have put 250 rounds down the tube and I am still shooting it.
I understand this is not the classifieds as it is not for sale YET. Any interest?

Don't give up!!! Make sure you have at least .020 clearance between the barrel and your stock. If your action is not bedded do it. Not hard at all to do. Adjust your trigger pull if you can. Hard trigger pull is a sure group killer.

Thanks, Supersparks. There is plenty of clearance for the barrel. This one is a light varmint contour and the stock will fit a bull barrel. The action has pillars but has never been bedded - and it shoots bugholes with the 6XC barrel on it. Trigger is down to a few ounces.

Edit: I shot a .343 MOA five shot group today using WLR primers. I'll shoot that load again Monday to confirm. But that is still not as accurate as I would like it to be.

I have fantastic results with necking down 284 Winchester brass, once at 6mm I turn the necks to .014" thickness, trim to a uniform length USE MAGINUM PRIMERS, load with RL17 or RL22. I have a 12 twist and can shoot bugholes with 66grainers all day.

Keep trying!! my 22-284 loves H1000 and 75grainers.

It appears as if that ol' 6-284 is still giving you fits huh Bill? Did you ever play with the neck tension like we talked about Bill? Just stabbing in the dark trying to help you bud :)! BTW, I'm shipping those barrels off to Mike today so they can get some candy thrown on the end of them ;)!

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks, Guys. Actually I have no problems getting to .5 MOA but I want .25 MOA and that is what I haven't found the magic potion for yet. I started with magnum primers (215M's) and RL-22 with 105 AMax bullets. Then switched to 105 Hybrids, then lengthened the throat a little, then to H4831sc. I have also adjusted stock torque, took off the MagnetoSpeed bayo, used a front rest instead of the bipod, and swapped scopes just to eliminate any other variables. For my last outing at the range, I tried BR-2 and WLR primers, and it looks like the barrel prefers WLRs.

Sounds like you're getting closer Bill!! Good luck and hopefully you will get her figured out before she's shot out ;)! I'm off to the barn!

Take care,
Mike

Bill, have you ever tried any N560 in that thing? Or N550 for that matter? That was what I was using when I found this thing called a 6xc..... and the 6-284 was sold within about 6 months. ;) WD

Had similar problems with my 6-284, after much dissapointment I tried RE 22 and had poor results, then went to RE 25 and WOW 1/4 and better at slightly over 3500 fps. Hope that helps.

Thanks, Paul. If I had any RL-25 I would try it. I'm currently trying 95 VLDs with RL-22, 54.23 grains at various seating depths. Next up is H4831sc and RL-17.

WOW. 3500 fps!! What is your barrel length? Which bullets?

Try Tula/Wolf LR primers. The only time I used Mag primers were for H-870, H 5010, or VVN170 when below 30 deg.

I have been wanting to try Tula primers for several months now. But haven't found any. I only want a couple hundred at first for testing.

Thanks, but I'm not even remotely close to Minn. AZ for another four weeks, then we will take two weeks to get to NC. After five weeks in NC, we will go to PA for a week, then OH until the end of Sept.
By the time I get to OH, I will probably have a 243 AI barrel on the 12 BVSS. And who knows what will become of the 6-284 barrel at that time.

Have you tried any lighter bullets as my friends really shined with the 75 and 87 grain hornady bullets with h4831.

Jon, I'm working with 95 VLDs now (and they are showing some promise). Its a 26" 8 twist and I'm afraid I would overspin anything any smaller causing the bullets to blow up. I was wanting the barrel to be a 1000 yard groundhog and steel barrel but I need .25 MOA for that. As I told another forum member, it is already a 600 yard antelope barrel and I may just have to satisfy myself with that. Or after my 243ai barrel arrives, if the ai is as good as I expect, I may sell the 6-284 barrel.

That's interesting, I was sure that I would blow up bullets running between 3500 and 3600, during trials it didn't happen, but I know of several shooters that had that problem. We are shooting the J4 target jackets and if one were to use hunting jackets to would surely lower the risk of blowing up bullets. One more push for RE 25, it worked so well that it really is a must try. All testing was at 600 Yd and they shot less than 1/4 moa at 600 with that powder and Berger 105 VLD's.

I really want to try RL-25, Paul. Just no luck in finding any. I did get 2 pounds of IMR 7828ssc after waiting over an hour for the truck to get unloaded at the local Sportsman's Warehouse.

Anybody have a recipe for IMR 7828ssc and Berger 95 VLDs?

Yes in response my barrel finished at 30 inches, the bullets I use are Berger 105 either VLD or Hybrids. From my findings faster powders will not produce the desired effect that you are looking for. Good luck
