Forming 6-284 Brass ????

I just got my 6.5-284 Lapua Brass and Redding FL sizing Die today so I decided to make a 6-284 Dummy Round.

I lubed up the case with some Imperial wax and ran the brass in to the die, adjusting the die until it got down to the shoulder.

I didn't notice the crease until after I seated the bullet.

Is this a common occurrence?

Would I have better results if I had a neck die with a couple of bushings to bring the neck down to size in smaller increments and then run it through the FL die?

How do those of you that have been down the 6-284 trail make your brass?

The crease is from excess lube (TOO MUCH). It also looks like you PUSHED the shoulder back (Bulgeing at the body shoulder junction). Take the expander button out of the sizing die, lightly lube the case I use Hornaday case lube(the spray kind) or Imperial . You just need to size enough of the neck down to get the case to chamber with a SLIGHT crush fit. It's realy not any harder than a NORMAL sizing operation. Good luck and enjoy. I have 3 of them ;D

CJ6 - I am in the finishing process of a 6mm-284 build with a 26" 1-12 twist tube, I plan to run 66grain match bullets any thoughts on what I might expect. Any experience with that bullet weight?

Bob, I think the 6-284 is a long barrel cartridge 29-30"+. I had a 24" walking rig made and I'm not gonna make that mistake again. IMHO use slow powders long barrels med to hvy bullets 85grs to 105-115 or have a 243 AI win made up. My experiance with my 24" was a waste of money, not that much more vel than a 243 AI but a LOT more powder. The 12 twist is what I have in all 3 guns I picked it (well the smiths I talked to ) said it would work well with the velocity/bullet combos I wanted to use, 88gr Bergers ,87 Vmaxs, 85NBTs altho in subzero temps the 24" has trouble stablizing the bergers (cold /lower velocity/short barrel)the longer barrels don't have this problem.

That pretty much covers it. I made ALL the same mistakes. I made it a lot harder than it needed to be.

Dennis , It's also a good idea to anneal the brass after the first firing and check the neck thickness.

can you get away with a redding neck size bushing die or a full length bushing die or does it have to be a full length sizer with no bushings? how about a collet die i want to control neck tension when doing mine have not started yet.

Stenger , What I did/do is use a standard Redding neck die to do the initial sizing (but I see no reason not to use your FL/Bushing die). I have both of the Redding Bushing dies also. What neck dia your chamber is,along with sized down neck thickness dia will determine what size bushing you need to get. I have a .276 chamber nk dia and use.273-.272 bushings.

i was always told that a bushing neck die will not size the entire neck. if you look a a bushing sized neck there is always a small portion on the bottom that is left unsized. i will probably just size down with a standard neck sizer then expand then resize back down with a bushing die.

Try sizing 1 using the bushing die , the unsized portion MAY be just what you need to give you that SLIGHT crush fit you need. As I said earlier you only NEED to size for a slight crush fit (you won't need to fully size the neck with your standard die either)

That crease has nothing to do with over lubing. It is a flaw from the factory. I have seen it many times before. I had two pieces in my last 100 6mmbr Lapua brass. If fired it will split the neck.

I've used the step down dies made by Redding I think, a little at a time with lots of Imperial Wax and never had a single problem with any case, this was using good ole' W/W .284 and taking my time, I don't think I ever lost a case due to crushing but it does take a while to make 50 of them..I'm not sure you could accomplish it without that Imperial Wax however!!
