Considering a 22-243.

To each their own. If you just are looking to play with a wildcat its a ticket. Theres a few guys on here that have done it. It comes up every so often. Im sure itd push the bigger 22 cal bullets well though!

I`m starting one, haven`t decided on either the 75 or 80 Amax....

Talk to Fredo and Dan Brothers, both of them have the 22-243AI, that`s what i`m doing as well.

They will have great info from first hand users.

Phil.

I believe there has been several threads about 22/243 if you can find them. One of my personal favorites. Great performance with little more effort than normal loading. I've killed hogs, coyotes, and deer with no issues. I run 75gr amax and swift bullets around 3500fps out of a 26" shillen 1/8. I know several people that have them and they all wouldn't be without one. Highly recommended, don't think you'll be disappointed.

I have a 22-284, that I had built about 20+ years ago. Back then Jimmy and Lois Knox (JLK) were building an 80gr VLD bullet. It's an easier build these days, with the 6-284 LAPUA brass available. The barrel is toast, and I'm thinking a Bartlein barrel 1:8-1:7" gain twist for it and the 90gr Bergers. As you likely know, the key to decent barrel life is not shooting it enough to get the barrel hot.

What's wrong with the Middlestead, I have three and you couldn't ask for anything more out of a round.
they are a 10,12, and a 14 twist I was so impressed with it I bought the reamer.

You should not hate something that is so easy, no brainer. You can also fire form while hunting or target shooting with great accuracy.

Again, fire forming with Bullseye and cream of wheat is easy, real easy.

I have fireformed many piece of brass "Thousands" and it has happened more than once that, The fireforming load has been more accurate than the formed case load.
I am not trying to change your mind I was just clearing up a major misconception about fireforming.

question for the 22/243 improved guys. Im not trying to start a "mines bigger than yours" contest but what are you getting with the 75gr amax. 3500 fps started showing pressure with my standard 22/243 and accuracy went down as i pushed it so i just backed down to just below 3500. Still a healthy load but was happy.

To add to that I have found personally that fireforming brass with cream of wheat or other substitutes, and not actually firing a bullet eroad's the throat faster "a lot faster" I once was waiting for a 6mm cut rife blank
and in the meantime. I took a savage 243 pencil barrel and reamed it out to 6-06AI and fireformed 200 pcs of brass a la COW and after the 200 pcs were done, I loaded up some rounds and went to shoot a few down range and could not even get on paper. So after I took the barrel off and closer Inspection the throat looked like someone had set an acetylene torch to it.

The 75 Amax's have such a long bearing surface it is hard to get any speed, but I have gotten 3600 fps with a compressed load of RL19 and 50 thou jump, the 77gr are my thing with there short bearing surface with a compressed load of RL17 they are good for 3800+ fps with some where between 50 and 100 thou jump.

How much difference is there between the 22 CHeetah and the 22-243 AI.

How much case capacity does each one have?

I'm so in love with my 22-243AI... 80 amaxes... 3558 fps.... that I would wear a Ball Cap about it if I had one. Or maybe have a sign in my vehicle's window that says... 22-243 AI on Board... or maybe hire a sky writing plane to spell it across the Heavens.... or maybe send one to President Trump and watch his excitement make him exempt me from all taxes... forever.

My too, Dean! All of my 17AH, 223AI, 22/250 AI, 6/250 AI, 244 AI were all fire formed while hunting. I only recently got into fire forming with cream of wheat with the 22/243 AI.
