Confessions of a Savage addict

I believe it is a problem to have that much drift on target.

I'm not a Salvage fan, I think they are a pain in the a$$. And the funny part is that Salvage knows that as well, that's why they have one called "PTA". ;D

A Savage is what it is and at most levels of shooting you have to beat one to win a match. Savage quality aside, I'm not aware of any scope base misalignment situation that will cause a rifle to be "on" at 100-200 and off by 3" or more at longer range. The problem isn't the Savage, in my opinion.

The Savage is, indeed, a "mediocre" gun. Nothing about it is done to "excellence" and, because of that, I think they are now overpriced. I've had six of the Model 12 BVSS's, still have the original one, and it is the best $589 rifle you could buy 10 years ago. At our egg shoots in the early '00s Savages regularly outshot Coopers and Sakos.

The newer Savages with the "target" actions are probably still the most accurate out-of-the-box factory rifle you can buy. Certainly as good or better than the vaunted Remington or Winchester. They certainly have their warts and Savage seems to be so busy selling them that I'm not aware they've ever made a significant upgrade to them, which is a shame.

Sounds to me like you cross hairs arn't level with the bore. When you dial in elevation your x and y axis is drifting because it's canted one way or the other. There's are several 200's shot each match and one national record set at the 600 yard range I shoot at all with Savage target actions.

Ya know I was thinking some kind of "dot" reticle is the problem.

Like 247 just mentioned, the scope is not level. That's a real hard thing when you don't have some kind of leveling standard (crosshairs) in the scope. Or...you cant the rifle.

Just more to think about.

Since I have been shooting my Dasher now out to 500 and 600 I have found that the scope rail holes must be slightly out of alignment with the bore. When shooting at 100 on bull. It will be 2" to 3" to the right at 300 yards and a foot right at 500-600 yards. This is a repeated problem every time not the wind each time I shoot further out I have to keep dialing it over

While a savge action is great. It is what it is!!!!

This level of error cannot be due to barrel problems, or "spin drift".

It is due to scope cant, either in mounting the scope, or holding the rifle when shooting, or both.

You should have a bubble level on the rifle, and mount the scope so the cross hairs are plumb to the level, and use the level when shooting.

It WILL solve your problems.

Get the Wheeler Engineering scope level system. Very well made and the best I have ever used. I use that thing religiously on every scope mount job and it has given me nothing but excellent results.

NOT talking about the cheapo "LEVEL LEVEL LEVEL" system.

They have another one called the "Professional Reticle Leveling System" that is all machined aluminum and much better quality. Thats the one you want ;)

Not only must the scope be square to the rifle. but the rifle must be plumb when the trigger is pulled.

This is true.

Now be honest, ask yourself this question, how many Savage rifles have I been beating by? Then answer it. Custom's don't always win.

And beautiful women don't always make the best wives, but that's what we're all after! ;)

LOL! ;D

My family and I compete at 1000yd with 3 Savage actioned rifles, they have helped me earn 2 Club Championships in LV. VBR is a ton of fun and may not have been affordable if it was not for some 2nd hand Savages..... and I can change my own damn barrel! LOL

I've been a savage addict for 6 years now (sold my last remmy last year to fund my 5th build) when I mount a scope I put a level in the action, scope mount and the turret, after I align the rings and lap them then check them against string I have hanging in my shop. and have no problems shooting from 100 to 1000 yrds even with the factory red blade triggers (my open class rifle does have a sav-2 set @ 6oz )I have changed the barrels out to aftermarket barrels on 3 for one reason or another.

I might want to add optics can play a big role in your shooting when I built my 6.5 creedmoor I thought I had a bad barrel best group I could get @ 100 was .750 range and 1 1/2 - 2" @ 300 yds just for shits and giggles I took the bushnell 4200 8x32x40 scope off and put my sightron 10x50x60 on it. it was like night and day the clarity and crosshairs made the difference.

Hopefully scope cant is my problem. It certainly sounds like it maybe.
My scope is also a 10-50 Sightron
I am going to hang a plumb bob at 100 yds level my action I have a rifle cant level somewhere that will mount on my scope rail. Just have to find it.

Like I said in the beginning I have always been a big Savage fan.

That said, I got to check out a new friends custom drop port Viper today.
I have to say it is what it is

Makes you feel like the Savage in your hand is a turd doesn't it? ;)
Trust me I know from having my own Savage rifles at competition where others had BATs, Lawtons, Stillers, Defiance, etc.

American consumer economy at its best. If we can afford the best clubs even tho we suck at golf.
We buy the best
Nothing new here

Very true... Very true.

Although I feel that way at times, I still don't own a custom action. I also like the looks of a brand new GMC 2500HD truck, but wont buy one because it wont serve me any better than my other two slightly older trucks('04 and '08).

I also want a custom action, but dont "need" one.

.....I did cave and buy a really nice 1W driver a handful of years ago...my wicked hard slice still shows up on plenty of T boxes ;D
