Concealed carry test.

I’ve decided to get my CCL here in Texas. We’re a Constitutional Carry State already but my local FFL guy keeps bitching at me to get it so he doesn’t have to do the 4473 every time I buy a gun. A little research says it’s recognized in a bunch of other states, including Delaware.
I got a little nervous about the shooting test because it’s been a while since I practiced. Last time I got my card, there was no “test” Today, I looked up the shooting portion and thought it a bit easier than I expected. Is this the same test used elsewhere?

Michigan stopped scoring the shooting portion of the test. They watch you fire between 20-50 rounds and you get a pass/fail grade.

Josh, it is not a hard qual. You can do it easily. Get your shots up close and cruise at 15 yards with better sight picture and focus on your trigger control. I am a Cert. CC Instructor here in NC. Our furthest distance is 7 yards. We start at 3, then 5, and finish at 7. Hopefully you will never need it, but we all know how society has turned out in todays time. Most involved in shootings will be at close distances.

Good luck brother and don't worry.

The test here seemed awfully easy to me. When I got my first CCW permit in the mid 90's, at the 3 yard line I asked the instructor " Damn can I just pistol whip the target?". He didn't find it all that funny. Shooting a "clean" is easy peasy with the target and distances recquired.

I think it depends on the State and the training officer. In Louisiana, my initial test was something like 21 rounds with 2 mag changes and he had to watch you load one mag. A friend and I just did our 5 year recertification, but at different locations. He had to shoot about 50 rounds at different distances. I had to shoot 12 rounds at 7 yards with one mag change in the middle. Just had to hit the target.

I had a crazy thought, late last night, that I might have to shoot from horseback. Being Texas and all. Funny how the mind works in the wee hours
Seriously, I thought there’d be mag changes during timed fire, transitioning between targets, clearing a jam, timed draw and fire…..stuff like that.

I don’t recall what the course of fire was or is in AZ but most I knew at the time when I did it chose to do it with a semi auto rimfire. I didn’t choose that route but it sure looked easy with the rimfire.

@joshb
Go to a range with a friend.
Shoot the 15 yd or even 25yd 6" knock down plates.
Take a couple boxes of ammo.
By the time you are on the second box you should be hitting a few of the plates.
That should give you the confidence to take the test (under pressure) and pass.
Mag changes, clearing jams are good, but do that on your own time.
I'm OLD and SLOW.
Did some pistol training twice a year on trips to south Florida.
30 round limit. I used a 10 round and an 8 round mag in a 45, had one 8 round left over.
Slowest times of the whole group.
Don't try it from horseback just yet :)

Ventura county CA requirement:

Live-fire Qualification
A. Must pass complete course with each weapon approved for carry. (up to 5 in Ventura co)
B. Target: NRA Standard B-27 or IPSIC target.
C. Round Count: 16
D. Course of Fire: 4 rounds at each specified distance in 2 round intervals.
E. Time: 5 seconds at 3, 7, and 10 yards. 15 seconds at 15 yards.
F. Firing Distance: 3 yards, 7 yards, 10 yards, and 15 yards.
G. Passing score is all rounds on target, no complete misses

All from concealment meaning, draw from a holster that is covered by a garment.

I took it here in Texas with a revolver. Hardest part was getting cylinder start and rotation correct so you not dropping the hammer on an empty hole.

Just had to renew mine.
3 hour refresher course.
2 hours of blah blah blah and the shooting portion was on a B27 target
10 rounds @5 yds. 10 @7 and 10 @10yds.
Had to have all hits in the scoring portion. No time limit.
Scary thing was that some took the whole target.

It was a full class and I didn't want to take a bunch of time up just to be perfect.
Had all 10's and X's except for two 9's that got away for me. lol
I like the line from Quigley down under, I never said I didn't know how
to use one, said I didn't have much use for it. ( pistol )

We are lucky here in Idaho. I went for the CCL renewal, the lady asked me what I would carry, and I told her "either my G26 or my new Sig P220 Super Match...". She just smiled and suggested the Sig.

here in IN we now have constitutional carry but we didnt used to and when i got my permit there was no shooting test requirement. when i got one in ND though the target was an 81/2 x 11 sheet of paper. only shots that hit the paper counted from the different distances. Your test looks really easy. Id get in a little practice just the same.
