completely new to the scene!!!

hi everyone, ive been searching around on this site for some time now and like what i see, so i joined. my question is that i want to "build" a target/varmint rifle, and wanted to start with the .204. now, after looking around, i want to build a 6br around a savage target action, but dont know what size bolt head to get. savage offers them in standard and .223. i am completley new to building like this,custom barrels and reloading) so im sure ill be posting more ?'s as they come. any comments/advise would be greatly appreciated!!

Welcome to the site stay here and learn all you can. I have considered the target action too. Its a great deal. For the 6br you need the standard bolt head. If your shooting off the bench I would get the RB LP, or if your off your belly I would get RB RP,if your right handed)so you don't have to break shooting position to load. gunboy: Bought a new Savage mdl 12BVSS in .243 last Spring. At 400 rds. fired, mild loads) saw the beginning of firecracking w/ my borescope. Bought a 6BR .272 no turn neck reamer from Dave Kiff, re-chambered,26" barrel set-back to 25 1/8"). Using 32.5 grs. Varget w/ Sierra #1510 and holding 1/2 moa with 5 shots. I know it's not benchrest groups, but it is a factory barrel, and no neck turning like I have to do for my Shilen & Hart 6BRs' with .265" necks. Just load them out of the box from Lapua. Doubt I'll ever get another tight neck chamber built.

One caveat--there are much better stock choices than the Richard's,of Calif.) Microfit shown in the pictures. I would recommend the $300.00 pillar bedded stock from Sharpshooter Supply if you are on a tight budget. As to barrels, My PacNor pre-fit is ultra-accurate.

Re reloading, the 6BR is one of the easiest to start with because it works well with many different powders and pressure levels. N150, Varget, H4895, RL15 all work super with the heavy bullets.

Get yourself a good FL sizing die,with SMALL decapping pin), and I recommend the Wilson ss micrometer top seating die. You'll need a Stoney Point or other tool to find the distance to the lands--that's pretty important. As a starting load I recommend 28.5 or 29.0 Varget -- but some barrels can tolerate more.

You'll be happy with the caliber and very soon you'll be shooting tighter than you thought possible.

I built a Savage Model 12 action, a 6mm 1-7 1/2 Krieger barrel chambered by David Bruno in 6CM. Farrell 20MOA base with Leupold PRW rings and a Weaver T24 scope. Shoots .243 Winchester brass to fire formed with Sierra 107s on top of 46.0 gr. H1000. Then the fire formed brass is loaded with DTAC 115s over 49.0 gr. H1000 with CCI BR2. This is in a Bell and Carlson Medalist stock but will go to a SSS stock soon. This rig shoots better than I can and still competes. I shoot it 600 to 1000 yards. It was reasonable to build and is reasonable to shoot accurately and has great barrel life. I think I have $1500.00 total invested. It might not shoot as tight as a 6BR but it does what I need it to do if I'd just do my part.Thanks Joe Hendricks for the 6CM.

I realize some people will disagree with this advice:

Reloading is potentially dangerous ... especially for a rookie. For any first-timer I recommend eliminating as many variables as possible. Start with a standard factory production chambering. Once you know the reloading process inside and out, then you can move on to wildcats and other bizarre stuff.

Go with the .204 and have a ton of fun!

Driving to the range is potentially dangerous. Get a 6mmBR and enjoy. Loading of it is probably the easiest one I have that I reload for.
