competition for poor people

OK, I haven't shot any competition since '93, but I've been bitten by the rifle bug again. However, I have a wife and kids now and need to find something to accommodate that desire without forcing my family to adopt the outdoor lifestyle that is enjoyed by vagrants and transients.

Any suggestions?

F-class prone. You can take an off-the shelf Rem 700 VS in .308 Win, put a decent scope on it and a bipod and shoot w/o special shooting jackets, fancy benchrest equipment or anything else. I've seen factory built rifles do very well with decent ammo and a good shooter on the trigger.

When you wear ou the factory barrel in 4000 - 5000 rounds, upgrade the same rifle with a Krieger, Hart, Lilja or whatever strikes your fancy. You're not restricted to the .308, but it's a great cartridge to start with.

F-class prone shooting is the way I've introduced a number of my friends to competition shooting. Most can just take some varmint rifle out of the safe and start competing. F-class is all prone, and I've seen matches from 300 - 1000 yards. Most, around here anyway, are held at 500 or 600 yards, and run at the same time, and on the same line as conventional prone matches,meaning guys like me with the heavy leather jackets, funny shooting gloves and slings meant to turn the human body into a benchrest).

Well, I have most of my stuff from my HP days; shooting mat, coat,seems tighter now)and spotting scope stand. I've got the reloading stuff, I just need to decide what discipline I want to try. F-class sounds good. I still have delusions,at 44 years old) of getting a Distinguished Rifle Badge, but I like the challenge of shooting itty-bitty groups.

I would get a CZ-452 or a Ruger 10/22 22LR and look at RF Silhouette. Go over to the www.rimfirecentral.com forum and look around at the info there. A LOT of shooting for the money and the kids can join in and Mom won't be left out.

Our Club is shooting 1/2 scale, as well as 1/5 scale, 22RF and has a kid class that lets them shoot with a forearm rest and adult supervision. Great fun and bringing a new generation into shooting sports. As the noise is low and the ranges somewhat family-friendly, Mom might even come and enjoy it.

We have 100-yard rimfire BR matches at our club. My friend Glen has won a number of matches with a box-stock Anschutz MPR. They are now about $750, but all you have to do is add a scope.

In F-TR class you can be competitive with a stock Remington PSS or lamintated-stock Savage, with a good aftermarket barrel. Figure that will put you at about $900-1100 without optics.

If you have your highpower gear, get back into it. A box-stock AR costs you less than $800, and may be accurate eanough without any modifications. If you make smart purchases, it may be possible to buy a match conditioned AR for that much.

.223 Match ammo that doesn't cost an arm and a leg is readily available, and loading your own isn't tough.

Look at the new Savage LE model in 308 with the McMillan A5 stock. About as good as it gets for an off the shelf Fclass gun.

Also the Savage is easy to change barrels yourself into other calibers.

Buy an H&R M 12 or CZ 453 and shoot it in rimfire match? Rifles are under $400 each and well .22 LR wolf match ammo should do ya well! Its my personal favorite for cost v. accuracy.

I do have to try the CZech S&B stuff though.

Military matches or Garand Matches can be fun and rather inexpensive. However if your shooting a Garand against a AR...good freaking luck! They do have seperate Garand only matches for service grade M1's.

F-class is probally the cheapest of the Long Range and a Savage 10fp McMillan is a good choice and shoot it in the tactical bipod only class.
