competing in Fclass with electronic targets

Here's the solution..... Place a paper target in front of the E target. Now if the E-target fails to register a shot, simply look at the paper to confirm or rule out as a miss! Ta-Dah.... Problem solved.
Ok, I'm sure this will stir the pot.

there already is a paper target involved. with the SMT e-target systems I've used, it's even an "official" NRA target with rings and all. But since there is no need to continually swap out the target face between shooters, and holes won't be getting pasted... it won't be quite that easy.

I'm not up to the level of most folks in here so I can definitely see that if I were, this type of scoring system would make me nervous to say the least about dropped shots.
Couldn't they put an auto rolling device that would roll out a 6'x6' piece of white paper each time a new shooter gets up there? Think motocross goggle roll thingys to clear mud out of the riders eyes. Then if a shot wasn't registered, you could check the paper. Heck, why not just have a bunch of the remote target cameras up there too since we are spending the coin for the scoring system.

On a personal note, I still haven't shot my beautiful precision rifle (1st custom rifle) and I've had it for many months now. So I would like this scoring so I could shoot 1,000rds At one match just to practice my wind calls I won't mind a few dropped shots

I personally am helping on the install of the targeting system at lodi and we will definitely do our best to offer competitors the most out of this system. We took this system for a test drive last fall and im pretty sure everyone who attended was impressed. The system will allow us to handle more shooters in a day versus expanding to a 50 target line with a conventional system which would require more room and expense. I guarantee that we will do everything possible to continue to run a match with the competitor in mind. We will test it out at the regional at the end of the month and several of us will be trained in using and operating the system and we will also be helping you guys out come match time. We welcome you all to Winnequah Gun Club Brian Nettesheim

Thank's for helping out Brian. I can't wait to try out the new e-targets. See you in a couple weeks

If prices trend downward electronic targets future will be the future. I do think there is going to be some major growing pains.

Someone shot one of the mics at the SWN this year on the "demo" target. It may have been during the wind reading course I don't recall the exact day. I was one of two targets over from target near centerline. Needless to say it was out of service the whole day.

I'm a little torn because I've done a lot of learning in the pits. I've been fortunate enough to be paired with world class shooters and they've been friendly enough to help a newbie.

These are guys I may have never approached behind the firing line.

I know Earl and crew will do a great job and everything in their power to run another great Nationsl Championship. What worries me is Wayne and the Silver Mountain Target folks. From what I was told he did not handle the disaster down in Georgia very well a couple of weeks ago. Most of us including myself are not IT people and can not fix this system when it fails and it will fail at some point. Hopefully they will have adequate staff on hand to take care of whatever arises.

Electronic targets are coming. more ranges are getting them. The price point will come down eventually but till then we are stuck with the high prices. I think the e targets bring more shooters to the matches and keep bringing them back. Which help grow our sport. Look at the age group and numbers shooting service matches from now till 10yrs ago.

The "missed shot" happened to me. Drilling Xs and all of sudden no registered shot.

...and you've NEVER had that happen shooting on paper targets? I sure as heck have. Someone pulls it down, pastes the new hole, then pulls the spotter and pastes that hole... now they look for the 'new' hole, can't find it, run it up as a miss. Hell, I've stood there, in the pits, and *watched* the person next to me do that. After a brief re-calibration  they didn't do that anymore (at least not while I was near by...)

Electronic targets are the future, we might as well get started.

I am looking forward to using them, growing pains and all.

I'd love to train on e targets. Immediate feedback at long range would be fantastic. What a great learning tool!

I do IT for a living, and software is the bane of the business. I absolutely hate software. It is imperfect, flawed, crashes unexpectedly, produces bizarre and unrepeatable results. I could go on and on. Inserting computers running "software" into the outdoor environment including bright light, rain, glare, people like me who need reading glasses to see close (am I supposed to put on a pair of readers after each shot to check my shot, then take them off and shoot? Did no one think of this? thanks) where there will be no skilled tech support immediately available, where people have spent thousands of dollars on travel and time off, to compete in a national- or world-level competition? Perhaps there will be tech support for Lodi since it is a high-visibility event for the vendor, but then what? It will "probably" work, and I truly hope it does, but what if it doesn't? People who are accustomed to working in high-reliability environments where there is always skilled tech support and where software actually works most of the time can be too trusting of commercial software.

Am I supposed to bring my own iPad or other "device" to see my results? What happens if my device crashes, is that my problem? Is an iPad or other electronic device now a requirement for competition (depending on the system)? How will cheating be prevented with electronic devices on the line? Who will be watching what I type into my iPad?

Couple that with the undeniable fact that this will change the sport significantly. But hey, we're "doing it". Sow the wind...

What was the disaster down in Georgia?

The first SWN that I shot several years ago I was scoring Trudy Fey. She was pounding the X ring like always. As the string finished I told he I only had recorded 19 shots. I missed an X I know for sure today. She looked at me and said she had 20 empty pieces of brass. Got back into position and shot 1 more pin wheel X and replied " your the score keeper and you are in charge please pay closer attention". I have always wondered if she had not shot that X how I would feel, she won the SWN that year. Humans make the same mistakes. I own a Silver Mountain and it has it's problems from time to time but so do I.

I attend a lot of (traditional) matches where the entry fee is $20-25 for a 60 shot match and $50-55 for two days and 100-120 shots for record.

I haven't seen any electronically scored matches for less than double this. Now, I don't mind, because I am happy enough to pay the extra not to have pit duty. But $50+ for a one day match may well prevent new shooters from entering the sport.

A event held at Cool Acres Shooting Center on April 1st or so. Practice on Friday was fine (fewer people) Saturday came and was a disaster called the match at some point. Sunday was better for some but many targets had severe issues. Some guys loaded up and left.

From what I've seen, their entry fees are pretty steep. I wonder if any of it was refunded.
