This happened to me long time ago, but I still have no explanation for it.
For that time, I was using the Sierra 120 grain HPBT, flying at 2,841 fps in a 1 in 9" barrel.
Now and then, I was experiencing what I called comet tails like this
The white part is, of course, the hole in the target, the grey is the comet tail, which could be simply painted, or else have a cut along the outer part, following the curve.
This was happening in the 50 meter range.
I placed the question to the bullet manufacturer and got no answer; they didn't know what was it, and nobody had reported such thing before.
I wonder if today, after a long time, anybody has had this same case. Let's see...
