Colorado Guided Prairie Dog Hunt

timeout

Silver $$ Contributor
I've been invited to go on a Prairie Dog Hunt in Colorado. Has anyone ever used KB Style Adventures, Kevin Brown owner? Also the hunt is 3rd week in August. I'm just guessing, but thinking the shooting may be a little slow by then? The website says 100+ rounds fired in 6 hour hunt. I appreciate your input and advice!

I know nothing about the outfitter, but I would never pay to only shoot 100 rounds over 6 hours, that would be as boring as watching paint dry. You should use what you would have paid the outfitter as gas money to drive around some public land looking for dogs. Google earth is your friend. I am not against paying but it better be for barrel melting shooting or I will be pissed.

Hundred rounds a day would most definitely be a ''HUNT''... lt would be hard for me to come from Augusta Ga area with those numbers... However, lf l lived in the Denver locale Mr Styles' operation would be a welcome day trip.. Lot of difference between 150 miles from Denver and 1500 from Augusta

We shoot Beldings ground squirrels here, ("Skippy the Flying Squirrel") and average about 300 rounds a day. It is a target-rich environment. We clean rifles in the field, visit, munch, and shoot too, and could actually shoot more, but 300 seems to be what could be termed "satisfying" and not over doing it or feeling deprived of targets or shooting. We all shoot single shot bolt guns and No.1's (me) too.

We don't pay to shoot either, but paying to shoot ONLY 100 rounds in six hours is no bueno!

The days of "barrel melting" pdog shooting Is gone in my opinion. I have been on some good spots in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska over the last 10 years and typically we average around 100 rounds per guy per day when traveling with a group of 4 shoooters. Those numbers obviously increase if there are less shooters, so in my opinion if the guide is saying 100 rounds in 6 hours that is not out of the ordinary. Most guys don't like to pay a guide to shoot but the reality of it is that many guys don't have the time to scout for land on their own so that is the next best option.

I've traveled to Wyoming every year for that last 20 years. I hunt a 5,000 acer ranch that a friend of my owns and I can definitely assure you the days of burning up a barrel or two on a trip is not gone. We leave on the 30th and will be home on the 9th of June. I will shoot more than 2,500 rounds in that time. The only time shooting is slow is if it' overcast and even then 100 rounds can be shot before lunch. They are out there and in good numbers but you can't go to a town that gets hammered day in and day out and expect to get good results. Do your home work, go to the bar, buy some drinks and get to know the locals. There is a lot of good shooting out there but public land and guided hunts isn't where it's at.

you need to find better sources.
i would not go out for a 100 round day
i have 5 rifles for pd's, a 100 each per day, that would be ok.

August: Hot weather, dog towns previously shot and educated dogs.. 100 rds + / day.. no thanks.. But, if it's your first time to go..give it a go. Get addicted.. and maybe scout some other places. Let's us know "how it go."

Get on their cancellation list if possible. There will never be more dogs available this year than right now (in my neck of the woods). Unless you were promised virgin territory!

Some basic math says otherwise, to shoot 500 rounds in a day you would be pulling a trigger on a rifle every minute for 8 hours straight. That's figuring no time for eating, cleaning rifles, getting ammo out, getting a drink, or anything else for that matter. If you really do shoot that much more power to you but that's not common by any stretch of the imagination. I liken your statement to the guy that posts up about every one of his rifles shooting 1/4" groups all day long. Sure there are guys that can do it but it isn't happening for everyone. By the way if you have enough money to build all those rifles and buy the componets for all that ammo why can't you make a small contribution to the forum and become a site supporter?

three of the rifles are ar's
talking seconds, not minutes.
the sun is out for a long time this time of the year

I have shot 550 rounds in one day before. From 6:30 am until 7:00 pm. Five rifles and none were semi auto on that trip. It’s not hard to do if you have a couple good towns. If they were AR’s it probably would have been double.

My buddy and I shot 680 dogs one day on property that hadn't been shot for years . That is our one day record using mechanical counters for confirmed kills.I don't remember the total rounds fired and it didn't matter as we were having a ball ! That was 10 years ago and I still dream about that day! Never been able to repeat that number since. No guides.Just local knowledge led us there.

500 round days can happen....but in reality 100 shots in one day is a lot for most people. If you've never been before why not give it a go? It might work out better than driving around or starting from scratch.

Challenge yourself......If you do get 100 shots how many were confirmed hits? It's not as easy as you think either :D

Used Kevin Brown once several years ago and would not recommend him. Towns were small and had been shot a lot. 100 rounds a day is about right when we used him.

ok, call my friend. we use to work gun shows together, and he a pd shoot "guide"
