Co axial front rest

I want to build a co ax front rest with a design similiar to the Farley, Seb or Hunter type internals, has anyone built one or seen the internals, what are they like, I really don't need the whole rest, If I can't figure it out, Butch Lambert sells a nice co ax top. inquiring minds are thinking again!

Hi,
I too have never seen the internal parts of other coaxial front rests before. I only designed my coaxial unit, the internal parts) as simple as possible, btw.,Imho, the more simple the more versatile). My rest has 2,two) sliding plates & bearings for x & y movements inside of the coaxial body, and these parts are "the heart" of the coaxial mecanism. The mechanism is relatively simple actually, but you will need CNC equipments to make the parts right & very precise. Basically you will need CNC milling,or at least a D.R.O.) & lathe,CNC=better), and several others tools,a lot). You also must have good skill & technique to assemble the parts properly, to achieve the expected results.
I think I have already gave you "the key" on making a coax rest, with the x & y plates etc). If you're clever enough you can also design & make a great coaxial rest for yourself.
Good luck!...seb.

I have only used a Farely, but I understand Seb's rest is first rate. I replaced the tension screws on my Farely with the ones Butch sells, and I took mine apart to do it. The whole mechanism is a plate that slides x and y under tension, the top of the plate being where the bag top is bolted. I do not know the proper name of the bearings used to provide the "all around/direction" movement, but there isn't any rocket science in the design once you see the innerds.

Anyone have the patent number or inventor name. We could look it up on the patent web site to see how it works for those that would like to know.

I may be wrong but I don't think anyone has patented a co-axial rest design. There are quite a few of them on the market these day's, but I think Jim Farley may have designed the first one,I reserve the right to be wrong here as well:D). Sebastian came up with his design on his own but I'm not sure about the others. I'd bet you would invest more time and money building a rest than it's worth, unless you plan on marketing a new rest and eventually turning a profit.

Some people like to build their own equipment and have the time and resources to do such. If it took you less than 6 months you would have it sooner than many I have heard have had to wait. Personally I have enough scrap materials to build a few If I desired. Any used ones for sale?

If you order anything from Farley you will have to wait, they seem to be on a different schedule than everyone else. I got my Seb in a little over a month, and I would bet that Butch Lambert has his tops in stock. I build lots of my own equipment, including my rifles) but I don't build everything because the day is only so long. If you wish to build a coaxial then go for it and post some pics when you have it all done...I'll have shot in many matches by then with my rifles resting in my Seb.

That's good to hear. Maybe Farley has changed something in the production of their rest and maybe even actions:D. I've talked to several competitors that have waited years for actions and at least one that ordered a rest well over a year ago and still has no rest. Maybe he just fell through the cracks...
