Close up macro filter for dry fire

rap36case

Working up loads for new Shilen 308win
I have found that a 52mm macro filter 1+ diopter will fit nicely on the objective of my Vortex 6-24 ffp. This provides a distance to target of about 40 inches for dry fire practice. The set of filters cost me $8 on Amazon.

This is an option for those who want to practice dry fire indoors. I think a 0.5+ diopter would give a longer distance to target. Anyways just a cheap option for dry fire that is easy to thread on the objective and then remove.

This close distance depends on your lowest power. However, if your lowest power is 4 or below, you may not need this at all.

Cheap optics are no value. Lots of crap sold on Amazon. Close-up filters are not universally adaptable to all lenses. Typically, they are used with 50mm standard lenses for 35mm or standard digital cameras. They are a poor solution to close-up or macro photography.

Got a window? Don't want to alarm your neighbors... Got a backyard window? Maybe post an aiming point or target on your back fence? Nice reason to have a longrange scope that will focus at 10yds.

One thing might be of real value here. The idea of the macro filter being to minimize movement? Essentially...

Well, I have seen a computer interface that works with a rifle and laptop. The laptop shows a target and has an interface on the muzzle. Computer tracks the muzzle movement on the target and records it until trigger is pressed. Shows you how poorly you're holding and where muzzle is relative to target at moment of firing pin fall...

Could use a cheap laser taped to barrel and practice holding so your straying pattern is tight and watch your laser for movement when trigger is pressed. Maybe video it?

I got the macro filter. It works well. The focal point is about 12 inches from the muzzle (a LOT closer than I thought or wanted) and the depth of filed is very narrow. That said, it works very well and unlike the IOTA it doesn't restrict incoming light.

My objective isn't to try and hold the rifle steadier. That has proven futile for me. I am trying to practice timing the shot with the swing using sight picture.

I have a 1/3 diopter closeup lens that was originally designed for short telephoto lenses on a 35mm. I had to look long and hard for one. It focuses my 36X B&L sharp and parallax free at about 12.5 feet from the front of the scope. It is close enough to the objective diameter of my scope that I can simply use a little painters tape to hold it in place. This was something that I came up with on my own after discovering that a +1 was too much. I printed out a scaled out target, and put together a homemade plumb bob (screw, string, nut) and I can set up scopes in the garage, with the garage door down. This is the first time that I have published this information, and I have never heard or read of anyone else even trying it. It works just fine. I had to look long and hard to find the lens. I go to an independent dispensing optician that works with a lab in town, I think that I could get about any reasonable diopter number for about $35, but then I would have to have a mount made. I paid less than that for mine in a screw mount like a filter. Leupold has made close focus adapters but they do not focus close enough to work for my situation.

They would not tell me anything about their lenses, so I took a minor risk and it worked.
