Retired and have started to shot with a scope (tired eyes) would like to shoot 100-800 yards. shooting paper and varmints from a bench and ground. Don't want to buy a scope only to fine out it's not clear. What are some recommendations and why.

Without a doubt, IOR has the clearest glass. I also have Nightforces and Leupolds, which are great scopes, but for clarity, I would buy another IOR.
The best glass (IMO) that I've ever seen in a variable was a Zeiss 6-24 Diavari FL scope. Very expensive and the best view through the scope I can remember seeing, and I've seen pretty much everything.
At a more reasonable price are the Nightforce BR scopes. Very good glass, built like a tank and repeatable. I use the 12-42s for 1,000 yard competition. Can't top it for anywhere near the price.
Once I got Nightforces the Leupolds were relagated to field rifles rather than competition. Older Vari-X IIIs. Not a thing wrong with them, never seemed to run into the issues others have with them so I don't plan on selling any of them.
Otherwise Sightrons seem popular with a few friends, the glass is very nice for the price, and no one has complained about reliability yet. haven't seen the new 10-50 power yet, it's new on the market. The 6-24s seem to hold up.
Only other scope I'd recomennd looking at would be the top of the line Bushnells (Bausch & Laumb when I bought them), the Elite series. And older Elite 4000 has stood up well for a few years now.

I have had my Sightron 8x32 sIII a few months now and i love it. it tracks well and is very clear to me.. hope this helps.
Well guys there are alot of good scopes out there you just have to decide what you can see through thats in your budget.My eyes are very poor so i need very good optics to be able to see clearly. I got a IOR valdala Tatical 9-36x56 and the optics are great,the field of view is unsurpassed,it has so many features its hard to compare ony other scope to it. at a price of $1,800.00 its not cheap.I like it and love the 25mins in one turn of the dial,I can dial out to 1,000yds in one revolution,jep never leave one turn of the dial(thats cool) have on 12x 10mil reticle thats right. and seems to be 1moa on 36x so have 20mins of retical.Like i say there is so much this scope offers and the optics are so good its hard to look through any thing else.There is just one BIG problem with it ! It is freak-n-HUGE! they say its 39oz but feels like 5lbs,It is SO BIG all my friends make jokes about it like hey does that thing make ice.Nobody has ever looked through it and been unhappy with the optics,my friend's 8-32x56br nightforce looks little compared to it.I do like it but i would consider selling it and going with a nightforce,but may keep it and get a nightforce next year anyway.I feel leoupold has been letting us down and way over chargeing for what they have been selling, makes me mad to talk about it but hey a mark 4 is junk compared to this scope,no field of view,poor glass,fair adjustments.and a mark 4m1 8-25x50 is $1,900.00 the nightforce is good just as expensive,no field of view,and limited retical only 15moa in the big powers.So i went with the IOR for what it offered and i like it but its just TOO BIG!

I have almost everything, but the March and the Sightron scopes. Day in and day out the Nightforce are the better optics. I have one Leupold, out of seven or eight Leupolds, that will match the Nightforce in good light. IOR, Nikon, Burris, Weaver, Simmons, Bushnell, and B&L don't match it. The Nightforce, at low power, is very good in low light.
swaroovski has the cleariest glass ive ever seen, but there tracking leaves alot to be desired. i shoot a nf because its a great combination of tracking and clarity
On a budget you will not go wrong with Nikon Monarch or Burris Signature. Been pleased with both on several rifles out to 1000 yds. with good clarity/contrast/color and consistant zero.
Frankly I do not have $1800, $1500, or even $1000 to spend on optics if I want to keep competing. I spend that cash on bullets, primers and powder!
Current Long Range rifle wears a used Leupold Vari-X III purchased for less than $500.
