Clearcoat on bare wood stock?

2 tips:
Get some 600,800 and 1000 grit for your palm sander and sand the stock we’ll BEFORE you apply any oil.
LEAVE the final sanding dust on the stock and rub in the first coat, letting the dust mix with the oil to act as a filler in the open pores. DO NOT wipe or blow the dust off with compressed air!

I use the Spraymaxx 2k clear on stocks. It’s a breeze to apply and it’s tough as nails.

The Spraymaxx “matte” clear is more of a dull satin and the glamour of course is extra glossy. So if you want a duller finish, the matte works well.

The matte doesn’t drip or run very easily either. I sprayed it on very heavy with a test piece hanging vertical and I really had to cake it on to get a run. So you can apply nice thick coats on vertical surfaces without worrying. Excellent stuff.

However, I haven’t used it much on wood. The one laminate wood stock I used it on I applied a dark weatherproof stain then finish sanded before applying the 2K clear. Holding up fine so far but not even a year old yet.

I don’t bother with all the mixing and spray guns. I use the Spraymaxx 2k clear on stocks. It’s a breeze to apply and it’s tough as nails.

The Spraymaxx “flat” clear is more of a dull satin and the glamour of course is extra glossy. So if you want a duller finish, the flat isn’t actually a full flat and works well.

It flat doesn’t drip or run. I sprayed it on very heavy with a test piece hanging vertical and I really had to cake it on to get a run. So you can apply nice thick coats on vertical surfaces without worrying. Excellent stuff.
@Tommie, care to elaborate? Lol

This is the stock that was broken at the wrist... I've had the spraymax 2k sitting on the shelf for 6 months now, so I figured it was time to test it.

Sealed the wood with Total Boat penetrating sealer
3 coats of clear
sanded/blocked with 800 wet
3 more coats...
It's curing now..

Seems to be pretty nice stuff.

Anybody use or try the Tru-Oil Armor All magic combo? If you haven’t check it out.

I have. I've refinished 2 Coopers 10-15 years ago, using Armor-All as a catalyst with Tru-oil. Works excellent. They still look as good as new. You can probably do 4 coats per day using it.

That thread referenced above is a lot newer than the original it was several hundred pages long. It was on Rimfirecentral but maybe around 2000 or earlier.

So… for those of you who have gone down the Arrow Wood oil path, exactly how have you sealed the wood prior to applying it? I saw another post that hinted at a filler/sealer but that seems to be more a filler than sealer.
I’ve done a couple. No sealer. Sand to 1000 and leave the dust on the stock. Start with a heavy coat of oil and hand rub it in. No cloth! The dust mixes in and fills the pores. Your fingers act like a squeegee. If some of the pores don’t get filled, wet sand with 1000 to create a slurry to fill them.
