Cleaning

New to the forum and not afraid to reveal ignorance. I have a Savage Axis heavy barreled 243 that I love to shoot. Mostly targets of one sort or another. I had it down to a .75 moa and was tickled. Ha being said that, I decided to clean the barrel trying to get tighter. It took 14 rounds after that to get bac to a respectable group. How in the world do competition shooters scrub there barrels and go back out and compete? I swore I would never scrub a barrel again but I know it's needed. HOW DO THEY DO IT.

they dont use savage axis barrels
i have a Kreiger 6.5 barrel that takes 7 or 8 rounds to settle down after a good cleaning

Welcome! My short answer would be many don't. It could be the difference of shooting an aftermarket barrel vs factory.

They are using custom, precision made barrel blanks that cost more than an entire Axis rifle.

OOPS . Never considered the quality difference. Years ago I shot some trap with my Remington 870 field gun and did pretty good. Decided I'd go up against some big boys , damn near sold a good field gun. Maybe just expecting too much from what I've got. Thanks guys

I cleaned my rock creek 308 and my factory rem 700 308 barrel back to back. Roughly the same amount of rounds same handloads.
After putting in the copper solvent an had a HUGE pile of patches, it looked like a murdered a Smurf, endless stream of blue patches.

My custom rifle took 5 patches before it came out clean.

Thanks again, that's why I stated right off the bat that I'm not afraid to admit that don't know everything.

Shooting a DRY cleaned bore can cause your problem. Always lube the bore after cleaning with a quality high pressure oil such as Marvel Mystery Oil. Run one patch soaked with oil then run a loose dry patch to remove the excess. It always aids cleaning to do it while the barrel is still warm immediately after a shooting session. Do NOT use an oil with teflon in the bore.
