Cleaning your gun??

Try Montana Xtreme copper killer 50BMG. Run patches through then scrub with a good brush. Then I run Kroil through it and dry patch. And finish with some Witches brew bore lube. That stuff is great. Keeps the barrel clean twice as long and can increase barrel life.

I use nylon brushes only and have never had much trouble. But I still never reverse the brush inside the barrel even with nylon.

I would suggest you stay away from 50 BMG. Its very risky to use. Stick to wipe-out patch-out and you will be much better off. Its a lot safer for your bore.

Individual barrels require different cleaning regimens.

Some calibers tend to require cleaning more often than others.

You mentioned: .17HMR, .22 LR, .223, .308

.17HMR -- Barrel-makers have a hard time making bores this small. The available ammo is pretty inconsistent with a lot of run-out. RESULT: it's not uncommon to require cleaning every 50 rounds.

.22 LR -- Match Bullets are lubricated, speeds are low, extremely high-grade barrels are available. RESULT: Some match barrels only need to be cleaned every 2000-3000 rounds and some barrels are still winning after YEARS of not being cleaned.

With a good-shooting .22LR barrel you better have a darn good reason to stick a brush in the bore.

It seems that no matter what product I try I keep ending up back to JB compound and Hoppes #9. Sweet's 7.62 seems to work okay for light copper fouling and it works well as an indicator of if copper's cleaned out. I just bought some KG 12 copper remover and wasn't really impressed yet, I'll have to see how it does on a few other barrels.

There's no amount of carbon or copper that won't come out with JB though. I'll admit I was scared the first time I used it but now I'm a believer in the stuff.

Throw the cleaning rod out as fast as you can and get a good quality 1 piece rod and a bore guide to go with it. Sinclair web site should be a good place to get what you need. More people ruin barrels cleaning them to often. Clean when accuracy starts to fall off and when rifle will be put up for long periods of time. Never start cleaning from the muzzle end. These are just my opinions.

Why do you suggest to stay away from 50 BMG ?
What are these risks ?

As I know of the "Montana Extreme 50 BMG Copper Killer" is that it is a petroleum based ammonia cleaner. That being said, petroleum based ammonia cleaners are very safe compared to water based ammonia. They repeal rust and can be left in bores safely.

It still will cause eroding and pitting in the bore no matter what if its ammonia based. Just because there is petro in it doesnt mean that its gonna protect your bore. It may be better then the old 50 BMG but i still wouldn't trust it. When there is product out there like wipeout that is completely bore safe why even risk it? If you take a plug and fill a barrel up with it and let it sit for a month and dont see any pitting i will change my mind.

I would recommend NOT buying a Tipton carbon fibre rod for your 17. I bought one a while back and it broke after only using it a few times. I was not abusing it or even pushing hard and it snapped. Tipton were not interested in replacing it for me.

What do you think about gunslick straight carbon fibre cleaning rod for the .17HMR?
My boyfriend has a gunslick carbon fibre for his .270 and it’s really nice but for the lower calibers I don't know.

Siiri,
I use Dewey & Tipton rods but I have herd good or bad about the gunslick rods but I have herd good things about there cleaning products. If he is happy with his give it a try. Get your 17 back from savage? what did they say?

No I haven't got my .17 back yet and still haven't heard anything either. It will be 3 weeks this wednesday.
