Cleaning question?

Is this normal? When I clean my .223 I run 2-3 wet patches until the last one comes out pretty clean. I then run a nylon brush down the barrel several passes. Then the first wet patch or two comes out black again. I then run another wet patch or two until no trace of black on the patch. I then repeat the process with the nylon brush. I can do the numerous times and the first wet patches that come out will be BLACK.

Sounds like a factory barrel to me. That's all I have, and mine do that as well. I just run a lightly oiled patch thru the barrel and put the gun up. Never had any issues later.

Yes it is. I was just wondering if this was normal? I can do this routine and I can sill get a black patch after the nylon brush or the other non brass brush. It does dissipate after a while but it will still come out with a little color. I think if I were to try to get it where nothing would show up on the patch after the brush I would need to buy a gallon of bore cleaner. So I normally just do my routine 3 -4 times and go shoot again. I have not noticed any accuracy issues the gun shoots well for factory.

Sounds good to me. You ain't eatin' with it so clean it like you have been and shoot it.

The brush will "trap" gunk in it and can re-deposit it in your clean bore! I've sprayed my brush with brake-cleaner and that
seems to help with this. Give it a try if you haven't been cleaning the brush each time between patches.

I experienced this with a factory 308 I shoot. I'd run a couple of wet patches, a nylon brush one time, then patch a couple of time until the patch was clean. Thought I was good to go. At somewhere around 200 rounds, the results went to 3 MOA. Thought my scope was loose. Good thing I had another rifle with me as I was 2hrs from home. I later took the rifle outside, and soaked and brushed and patched with Hoppes products. The carbon and copper removed was amazing. I must've been down the barrel at least 100 times with the rod. I was back to sub MOA. Lesson learned with this factory barrel. I've got to clean it well, or risk a spoiled day at the range.
