Cleaning Patch Thread

Hello all;
I realized that I might not be the only one starting a search for good cleaning patches. Up to today I've been using the big box store all cotton and having to buy several sizes to find what works. Example; 223 patches work in my 6.5; 22 latches for the 223; and 7mm for .308/.357. I'm sure there is a better product than what I've been using.

I prefer the push through jags and have an assortment of dewey components to use along with bore guides, and chemicals will be butchs for some, hoppes for another, sweets as needed.

I'd rather this discussion be oriented to patches, this:

What material is in your opinion the best, what thickness? What shape w/dimensions? Finally why?

I like that butches/hoppes absorb quickly to make nice saturated patches for the bulk of my cleaning work. Sweets for when I see blue from above, and clp to finish the bore when dry.

Thank you,
-Mac

I go through the cotton flannel selections at the local JoAnne's fabric store, select the weight of material I want to use and cut my own. I use my wife's rotary quilt fabric cutter and cut about a thousand at a time. That way they're custom sized, one heck of a lot less expensive and with a back-up piece of fabric in the closet I never run out.

mac86951,

I'll go along with what Dusty wrote and for those reading this thread that might not already know; with a pierce type jag, you can adjust, to some degree, how tightly the patch fits the bore by changing the location of where you pierce it. Tightest at the center, loosest toward a corner with square patches.

Had a friend whose son worked in a local clothing factory a while back. Negotiated access to the cutter & all the lumps of offcuts. Did his father a lifetime supply that one school holiday.

I use cotton patches that I cut to my own measurement (get them at Canadian Tire in the gun cleaning section). I use Plastic 22cal jags for everything up to 30cal, hence why I prefer to cut my own patches.

Using a Delrin jag, the Sinclair 1-1/2" round patch is a perfect fit in a 6mm barrel.

Excellent, thank you all!

I've been spearing near the edge to loosen them, however, my recent 6.5 build I had a few jags pass through the patch mid bore, thus the thread was started.

I like the idea of a delrin or plastic jag I'll keep a look out for those too. I'll have to stop by Joanne's too.

I have found that G. I. patches are the best for my use. I look for them at gun shows and when I find them I load up.

+1 to Dusty's and /VH's choice - Pro-shots don't fray like make your own patches and the thickness is super-consistent. For 30 BR a 2" round patch on a .270 cal jag works perfect.

I've tried several brands. Most leave small threads in the action which I hate or tear.

The best I've found which I've been using for years is the Hoppe's synthetic patches. You can purchase in bulk from Midway. Using Dewey jags I combine a 270 patch with a 22 patch and I get a perfect fix for a 223 and 243. No threads in the action and the patch does not tear under pressure.

Wal-Mart, buy cotton flannel by the yards cheaper ..cut your own, cheaper, and can find the size you need for different bore sizes..
