cleaning a tuner

I have Ezell and Woolum tuners and am wondering how others clean the inside area in front of the barrel muzzle? I just took one off a barrel that has been on for 1600 rounds and the buildup in front of the barrel on the inside of the tumer was hard and seemed to be carbon?

The Bob Green Tuners I use are one piece. I just wipe the inside out with a patch of bore cleaner. Yes you will see carbon built up on the barrel face when the barrel is toasted. I use that carboned up face to test bore cleaners on. During the life of the barrel I never remove the tuner or clean the face of the barrel.

Slip 2000 was recommended to me by Bob Pastor and it works very well.
A piece of wire to hang the tuner/brake suspended in the jar for a few hours
will do the trick. The jar on the left has a few years use and is next to a new
jar for comparison. Spray the brake or tuner with brake cleaner afterward.

Would this stuff work on a bench barrel removed and stood up in the bottle for a few hours to remove a hard carbon ring?

I may try a test piece of aluminum in some of those more aggressive cleaners like CLR. 50/50 white vinegar and water in an ultrasonic cleaner for 30 to 40 minutes will have it looking like new without attacking aluminum, neutralize it in baking soda water after removing it from the vinegar solution
