Cleaning 6dasher barrel

I'm pretty new to this and have read many different opinions. How do you clean your gun? I have been just using patches till now but am wondering if I should use a brush? If so how often? Thanks for your input.

I use the Bore Tech copper eliminator and follow the instructions on the bottle. Which are 3-4 wet patches then brush (I do wet the brush) after brushed a few times I then put 3-4 wet patches through and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Then I use dry patches until they come out perfectly clean.

Good luck! Oh and best thing about the bore tech is it doesn't have the amonia smell.

What solvents do you use? There are so many out there that its hard to decide. One solvent on the patch then something else on the brush then another solvent on the patch after the brush?

If Bore Tech makes it, then its a good product. I only use the copper solvent they make and it cleans carbon as well and makes what I keep in my box simple. Iosso is another item to use in the throat. It works very well to melt that stubborn carbon in that area. Learn to use these frequently and carbon or copper will never be an issue.

Myself, I first started cleaning barrels in the 70's and used a brush and patches.
At about year 2001 and after reading some hub-hub on the net about the use of brushes, I stopped using a brush all together for the most part, only using a plastic brush and very sparingly if and when I would.
In 2004 I had my first introduction to a bore-scope, and to shorten the story, I went back to using bronze brushes as part of the cleaning ritual, in every barrel and every time I clean. And have so ever since.

With one exception: I do only push a brush through the barrel (to protect against possible crown damage) , and do spin a brush in the chamber's neck/throat area a few turns, every time I clean.

It is to my experience that powder, primer, and copper fouling are quite easy to remove. Carbon and neck/throat layered burnished fouling is why I use a brush and advise the same.

IMHO Excellent routine!

While looking at options on a barrel to purchase, I ran into this section from Bartlein Barrels discussing cleaning.

Maybe this will help.....

BR shooter and gunsmith Mickey Coleman has this advice:

It could very well be that you're not cleaning often enough. Benchrest shooters clean after every match with very few exceptions. Seldom will they shoot 20 rounds without cleaning. If, however, you're at war then more shots between cleaning is expected but try cleaning more often.

Here is an easy method to get rid of copper but most people get faint when they hear it. Run two wet patches through the bore then take a brush and wrap a few wisps of 0000 steel wool around the brush starting at the handle end of the brush and wrapping toward the tip. Load the brush and steel wool with J-B Bore Paste and make ten complete passes followed by two wet patches then two dry patches.

I promise you that in almost all cases the copper will be gone and it will NOT harm the bore. Lest you think that it will ask yourself how often have you cleaned case necks with steel wool and how many case necks have you ruined by doing it. Is brass harder than barrel steel?

Doing something THAT crazy would change the inside spec 's of your stainless barrel by .00000001, been doing it for some time and they all scream at me!!! this DOG ain't worried about it. Dogdude
