6Dasher hunting rifle

If I were to build a 6Dasher to use for hunting and instead of a bull barrel use a sporter barrel to save on some weight, how much accuracy would I lose? Just wondering if you are working up a load for your gun how much it matters to have the bull barrel?

A good quality barrel will shoot regardless of the contour. A #3 or similar contour barrel will shoot the first 5 close, but you may see it wonder after that. The bigger concern I would have is the action used. If it is a repeater action, you may have some trouble feeding the dasher rounds unless your gunsmith can work some magic on the ramp. I have a couple Ackley calibers and they had to be modified.

I just had a 6 Dasher sporter built. It is a Marlin XS7 308. Randy Gregory installed a Rock Creek 5R, 1-8 twist barrel 26" long. Also lapped the lugs, extended the ejector, pinned the recoil lug, glass bedded the lug , and floated the barrel. I picked it up yesterday, and will not have much time to dedicate to it for awhile. I ended up with a lot of money stuck in a XS7, but that's what I wanted. I will keep you posted on velocity and accuracy when I can get at it. Our garden is taking a too much time. Barlow

I worked up some loads and did some testing this past week. I used the 87gr VMax and 105gr Amax, and the 100gr Hornady SPIL. Could not find any data for the 87gr, so I started with 31gr of RL15 (only powder used) and ended at 35 gr for a MV of 3238. 4 shot group of .562 at 100. 32.5 gr gave me 2970 with the 105 Amax with no pressure signs, and a 3 shot group of .451. Last I tried the 100gr SPIl 32,5gr put 3 in .097, but of course when I fired the fourth shot it was high and the group was.787. 33 gr with the 100 was .411, 3 shots. Action feeds fine if you work the bolt fast. Randy did a great job putting this thing together. I'll do more with other bullets as time allows. Leupold 6.5x20 with turrets. I'll do more testing with other bullets when time allows. Also, I have and had terrible head and chest cold while loading and shooting. Barlow

Sporter barrels can shoot very well, I have put together a few hunting rifles using #1 and #2 contour barrels that will shoot .5" at 100yards and under. Quality barrel and quality work will get you there.
