Classic custom Mauser

That's pretty awesome.

Howdy !

If I saw things correctly, the receiver has a stripper clip slot?
That + the time frame mentioned, would seem to indicate the receiver was a M-98 liberated from the " Gerries " in WWII....
or just after. I dunno... maybe Mexico was formerly using Mausers for their Military; too....given the receiver marking ?
I'll defer that to others, more knowledgeable on the topic .

There were plenty of .22-250s chambered up during the years the cartridge was a wildcat. Remington made it a standardized
factory offering in 1965, adopting the iterration w/ the 28* shoulder.

I went to a local gun show this past weekend and found a rather nice sporterized Mauser. I've been looking for a rifle chambered in 22-250, and this fit the bill nicely. When I got it home I promptly disassembled and gave it a quick once over and cleaning.
I was pleasantly surprised to find a Timney trigger installed. I don't have a trigger pull scale, but it is nice and light.
I love the look of this classis sporter. The grip cap was old dried and warped plastic. I need to find a suitable replacement for that. I've also been told that this barrel might have been manufactured before the 22-250 was standardized my Remington. That is rather likely as the barrel is stamped 22-250, not 22-250 Rem.
Has anyone heard of P.O. Gottschall? The name engraved on the receiver (Bob Beaton) could be who the gun was built for, or the name of the smith.
The barrel is a 1/14 twist, so I have some 50 and 55 grain factory ammo I'm going to try out.
I'm excited to set this guy up and see how it shoots.

Pretty nice. I would have bought it. I would like to have one like that. I might slightly prefer one done on a 1903.

It is just short of perfection as is. If it were mine, I would have to call NECG and order double set triggers. I have several set up that way. There is something almost magic about the way that crisp set trigger 2 oz or thereabouts pull.
You have done well,

ISS
Set trigger, double, YES!

With that 14 twist, try some 50 gr. V-Max and maybe some other 50 gr. bullets, maybe some Hornady 50 SX (flat base bullets) if you are a handloader. Beautiful classic rifle.
I was looking through my Hornady loading manual and they recommend a 40 grain Vmax. So I bought a box and loaded a few different charges with Varget to see how it works. I also loaded up some various 55 grain bullets. I’ll have to order up some 50 grain bullets as well.

I bet if you recrowned that barrel it would shoot better.
I’ve thought about that. I ran a bunch of patches down the barrel with Hoppes benchrest copper solvent. There was A LOT of copper in the barrel. When I have a chance I’m going to see what that did for accuracy.

Were there any surprises under the copper?

The receiver is Nazi marked and dated 1940. No doubt about where it came from.

Thanx for the definitive answer !

I had a liberated " Cherman " M-98, that was made into a benchrest rifle by NW Ohio riflesmith C.L. Meracle, not too long after WWII.

Stripper clip slot, double set triggers, huge dark walnut outer-space lookin' stock w/ huge Monte Carlo roll-over.

The barrel was a 22" straight bull 5-groover 1-14. Upon inspecting the rifle, reknowned riflesmith Fred Sinclair once opined that the barrel might well have been made from a truck axle, from within the immediate post-war years.

It made a really good varmint rifle. I have a pic, but am having trouble getting the file down-sized enough to be accepted as an attachment.

I don't know why a rifle made in Germany would be exported when they were already at war (1940 ).

Mexico had been producing a version of the Mauser starting in 1910. The replacement was the model 37 made in Mexico City and the design is based on the model 98 and the American 1903.

I also see what appears to be the German Eagle ordnance stamp ?

I don’t have a bore scope but beat I could see, the bore was flawless. Shiny and bright.
That is great news. Some years ago I balked for a long time on a similar Mauser in .220 Swift. Eventually it was sold. I regret not buying it.

I highly recommend the Horandy 55SX over the 50SX, esp If you are going after groundhog; and engagement distances might go out past 250yd.

Also recommended.... WW60 + FED GM215M " Large Magnum Rifle Match " primers. I loaded for and shot a bunch of factory .22-250s from Remington, Ruger....and custom.22-250s from Ackley, Sinclair; and Penrod. All barrels were 22-26" 1-14s, the to my knowledge. My best friend used the same load combination in his 26" Savage 112V .220 Swift. While, I also
campaigned my wildcat " . 22-35 Remington " in a 24" 1-4 Hart - barrelled custom Wichita WBR1375, using the 55SX-WW760-GM215M in the energy delivery equation. It just flat works
( when rifle barrel bore is in gocd condition ).
