Claro Walnut Stock- A Work in Progress

A little update: I'd been waiting on a barrel to make the barrel channel tight. I cut a dovetail into the tip and the ebony piece. Although it doesn't appear in the photo that the dovetail extends all the way rear and on the sides, it does and the epoxy covers up the tight fit with a little spill over.

I used devcon10110 to make sure its a solid connection. You will only be able to see this detail when the barrel is off.

CStuck, your work is absolutely beautiful. Forgive me for this amateur question. When contemplating staining a walnut stock, is there a method of applying a solvent or similar to estimate what the grain and figure will look like un-stained with a clear finish? I really like the old reddish colors of bygone days, like a Pilkington red, but don’t want to lose or hide the natural beauty. Once applied, it seems there is no going back.

Thank you, Peter.

Beautiful work sir! A nice piece of wood like that deserves to be treated with the talent that you have. Well done!

Still needs some work, the barrel channel isn't an exact on each side of the barrel and that's going to drive me nuts until the two sides match. Also now that it is all inletted, I can do the bolt handle relief, as well as the ejection port. There are still lots of little details to clean up, but thats just part of the process for me.

Hope you guys enjoy a little clip here

Just got that barreled action last week. It’s in .308 Winchester. My dad clear coated it for me, because he said it was so pretty it needed extra protection. He did 5 coats.

No worries on the ejection port. My dad is going to open it up. It’s my fault since we planned a rem 700 and then I used a defiance tenacity instead. Extremely, extremely happy with it. I have a Bushnell DMRII going on it. Just waiting on rings.

Its perfect. Lighting and my photo skills aren’t doing it justice.
