Chuck of a different color

Back in the day before the housing boom here in N.E. Pa it was common to hear about shooting one that stood "bigger than a barstool." :) Sons of neighboring farmers had yearly competitions......and those shot were quickly replaced- you just couldn't wipe them out by shooting. Those were the best of times. I was very fortunate to experience it when "out in the country" meant boondocks- no close neighbors.

I think it very telling that the size comparison likely came from an object very familiar to the "teller of tall tales!"

True, but that image brings back memories of how huge they can look in the fields given the right lighting conditions.

I shot a white groundhog in VA a few years back that had come out from under a big brush pile. I went to retrieve it and there was one of those underground hornet nests a few feet from the hog and they went crazy when I approached. Being allergic and otherwise not willing to take one for the team, I left it for the buzzards…

Never seen a black one or a white one. Years back, in Idaho I shot one that was a bright gold color. It just glowed. My belief is that it was a special emissary, sent from the departed 'chuck spirits to make peace with gun toting humans. Too bad......a gun toting human and a 50grBT @ 4225 changed that. After realizing what I'd done, I felt just terrible about it.

Rick, not in my house. Wife doesn't like strange animals in there. Have a very large room built with my 2 car garage. Have 94 animals in my zoo. The hippo mount is real skin with artificial skin. The real hippo skull on a pedistal with a bullet hole right in front of the brain. Got him with my .375/.284 XP-100 handgun at 129 yds-1 shot. He's SCI #11. To his left is a really nice blacktail I killed in OR at 165 yds. with my 6.5/.284 XP-100. Guide researched it & told me he was the largest blacktail killed by any weapon the year I killed it.
Every animal in the pic was taken with 1 shot from my handguns except the elephant. He charged me. Dropped him at 12 yards. Needed a second finisher on him.
All my African taxidermy is done by an excellent guy in SA. American animals done in WV.
