Chronographs

Bruno just informed me that Oehler no longer manufacture a commercial chronograph. I saved specifically for an Oehler as I experienced problems with my Chrony. What is the next best option? Chrony Gamma? Any advise will be appreciated.

I absolutely agree on a CED with IR upgrade. Those IR screens will save your bacon, your hair, your time and your cartridges. NO mis-reading because of tricky or inconsistent ambient light. Plus, after shooting I download the data to my computer and play with it in Excel, adding comments and range info for later use, posterity).

My experience with Shooting Chronies is mostly good but:

1. The Op Procedures to delete shots and clear memory are very hard to remember. I keep the instructions in a plastic bag taped to the underside of my range box. Invariably I have to consult them once or twice during the course of the day. It would be SOOOO much easier if there was simply one button for "delete shot", another for "delete string", and a simple rotary knob to select string #.

2. My Chrony Beta performs well in low overcast weather that gives diffuse lighting. Throw bright, overhead sunlight,at mid-day) or late afternoon angled sunlight at the Chrony and all bets are off.

One recent day at the range my Chrony was misbehaving and I moved over a couple of benches to use Forum Member BOLO's Oehler. It worked flawlessly.

3. Many Shooting Chronies seem to give velocity numbers that are 30-40 fps high compared to other brands. CEDs seem to be more consistent with the Oehlers.

I've been using 2 Shooting Chronies of friends and I'm not dissatisfied, only a bit perplexed as the readings differ by some 50fps.
The Shooting Chronies are readily available over here and relatively affordable, but I want to get myself the best. Is the CED so much better than the Shooting Chrony?
Where can I find the CED and what will the cost be more or less,Sinclair & Bruno do not stock the CED).
Thanx for the advise.

Midway carries the CED Millennium www.midwayusa.com

$169.99 for the basic chronograph # 524-035
$ 88.99 for the optional IR Skyscreens # 878-318

HTH,
Alan

I missed the CED on Bruno. It seems thereis a basic system for $170 and a system with options for $330. The more expensive one seems to include an infra-red screen and NMIH rechargeable battery pack.
Can anyone explain the use of the infrapred screen & if it, together with the battery pack justify the almost double selling price?
Thanx for the advise.

Alan, we replied simultaneously. Thank you very much for the assistance.
What is the use of the IR screen?
Does it justify the additional costs?
I want very accurate readings, but do not want to spend unnecessary money on additionals which are not really necessary, the exchange rate is killing us).

The IR screens really come in handy when your range has problems with light - either not enough light or very bright sunlight, both of which will drive you nuts with many brands of chronographs. I think the IR screens are well worth the money.

The rechargable battery pack is, IMO, only worth the investment if you're going to use the chronograph a whole lot. The standard 9v batteries are relatively inexpensive and seem to last a long while.

The NiMH pack is for the IR skyscreens only and have nothing to do w/ the 9v battery for the console. If you have regular electrical outlets w/i extension cord distance of your shooting point, you probably won't need the battery pack. If, like me, you don't... get the NiMH pack, or else find an old UPS and disable the audible annunciator on it... cheap 'battery pack', though a little heavy.

The IR screens are what make a chrono even useable half the time around here... our range sits up on a 'bench' on one side of the valley that suffers from temperature inversions a lot... in the summer, we get socked in w/ smoke from various forest fires in the region, and in the winter, we get fog banks parked at about 1000-1200' elevation... the range is at 1400'!

I haven't got around to trying to use them in the dark,w/ a spotlight on the target), but I probably should one of these days.

Hi Chris
Remember me Ian Thanks now we can shoot same more. When will you get your Ced I what to lent it or thast give it to me.
Ian

The PVM-21 is my next chrono. I'm not pleased with my Chrony as it's readings are optimistic by 40 fps vs. a friends Oehler 35.

The PVM-21 is not cheap though.
