Chronographs-whitch one???

Newbie to crono's. Which of the several chronon's would you care to comment on. Chrony, Pact, CED Mell. The crono will be used for working up loads for a 6mmBr for 1K paper punching, I know it needs more HP). Thanks for any comments and advice. Chuck Olson

Chucko,

Take a look at this thread: http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/post/6mmbr/vpost?id=54333

Bottom line, both the Shooting Chrony and CED Millenium will do the job. I think the CED control unit is more user friendly, while the Shooting Chrony is very easy to set up. But if you want the most accurate and reliable unit, Oehler still leads the pack.

My Chrony Beta Master has been reliable, but the software is NOT intuitive and it doesn't work real well with bright sunlight overhead.

I have a CED, and I really like it, it seems to be accurate, and repeatable. The numbers I get from it shooting 100 yards, have all been right on plugging them in to Sierra ballastic program to get 1000 and 600 yard zero's. It has the capability to spread the sky screens out to 8' if you want, plus you can add the infared sensors to eliminate lighting problems, if you get them, which I don't seem to experience. For the price, I don't think you can beat it, it is about the same as a mid to upper line Shooting Chrony, but a lot nicer unit, and about half what a Ohler will cost you.

I have a Beta Master Chrony and like it just fine. I use it to work up loads and to check them now and again. It's not an Ohler, but then again I don't feel that I need one.

My brother and I both have CED's. Our experience so far is that in the first year, they work really nice and I'd say it's the nicest chronograph on the market. It's one shortcoming is that lately it won't see bullets. Even with the IR skyscreens it's just not up to the task. The Shooting chrony is far nicer for seeing bullets but a little clumsy with the data. I really liked the features of sending the data directly to a database from the CED, trouble is, it's been so long since I had data that I never even get it out anymore. We tried everything. White cardboard over it, shade, light, under trees with and without diffusers, what a nightmare. Next is that there is NO cust service. Not bad cust service. None. No-one to get ahold of when you want to get it fixed or checked out. The photo-transistors in mine are just fine cause I checked them out with my scope. What I think is that the amplifier circuit is a little lazy. Jmo.

Prior to this I had a Pact Professional and I loved that thing. I think soon I will either own one of them or the Shooting Chrony Gamma model which I am told is a very nice unit,by a reputable source who also owns a 43 he never uses. Ohler just doesn't have the data collection I want. I've never used an Ohler that didn't' work well, but I simply want other features not offered by them. I got rid of my Pact because it would not plug into my PC. Now they do and I'd buy one of them in a heartbeat. Some reviews I see like on Midway say that there is no software available but that's not true. It's on the website.

My CED needs PERFECT light to work. It works well in total darkness and that is true. Trouble is, I shoot in the daytime. The shooting chrony I'm using now is an Alpha and it works in near dark. 8:30PM here in PA is no trouble. My pact I don't' think ever missed a bullet in the 3 years I had it. Don't ask me what I was thinking to sell it. The new ones look much nicer and they're on sale at Midway right now. As is the Shooting Chrony Gamma. ,Till end July 05)
