Bad Chronos

I see several Chrono threads here but do not want to hijack them. Most fellas are trying to get advice on which to buy.

I have used a CED M2 and a ProChrono. They have both had their moments. Currently they are reading 100fps difference. I tend to believe the M2, but then it hasn't read for the past two range sessions, albeit borderline overcast conditions).

My first clue was when I was working a load for my .284W. The ProChrono read 2950fps using 162gr AMAX over 53gr of RL17 in a 26" Broughton. A very accurate load. I took it to the range and tried to shoot my Horus Atrag calculated data of 3.6 mils for 600m. I ended up needing 4 mils. No big deal. There are various reasons ballistic programs don't spit out true data. I used a common, tried and trued technique of manipulating my MV in the program to force Atrag to read 4 mils @ 600m. I ended up at 2850fps. I then chrono'd this load in the M2. Guess what? 2850fps.

Okay, no big deal. My three year old $80 chrono sucks. I had that one coming. But since, the M2 has been extremely problematic. Now, the only reason I care what velocity I'm at is to minimalise wind drift past 600m. The gun shoots well at 2850 and the drift is acceptable, so I'll leave it at that and just get on with the business of shooting.

But, this got me to thinking. I'm done with chrono's. If I have regular access to a 600m+ range, I will develop loads by loading to the most accurate load at 100m. Then, I'll shoot it at distance and reverse engineer the velocity by determining required elevation data. This will consequently give me the associated wind drift. When I find a load that combines acceptable accuracy and performance at distance, I'm done. This is what we doing in the end anyway.

Getting wrapped up in Chrono's is an unnecessary speedbump. I've wasted too much time trying to make friends with them. I was about one step from dripping cow blood on chicken bones and sacrificing the neighborhood cat to make peace with the "chrono gods". I suspect this is what many shooters are already doing. Just wondering where you all stand on this?

I tried the ProChrono with arrows and couldn't get 2 OF THE SAME MAKE & MODEL to agree, so you know where I stand there. I'm now thinking M2 with the IR kit. Yep, it's almost as much as the old Oehler, but where you gonna get one of those? and the M2 seems to be the one just now where price and accuracy cross.

Reubenski, sounds like you have had the same experience as me with cheap cronies. What I do use them for though is if I have an accurate load, I check its velocity compared to a different load, whether it is different primers, moly, powder type etc) during the same session. The actual velocities dont mean much as they vary by 150 fps from day to day, but I am thinking I can get some meaningfull info by shooting different loads next to each other.

I have a CED M2 and it works ok. I can never be sure from day to day what exact fps it will spit out on a known load by as much as 50fps. My standard load runs at 3250 on most days but there are times I get 3200 out of it. How fast is it really going? I have no idea but does it really matter? Side by side tests for ES on a given day seem to read just fine.

For my needs an accurate ES reading over a 10 shot string is the most important and my CED does just fine.

With the CED you need to be sure that the battery is fresh. The low-battery indicator is a solid battery outline, which on most electronics would indicate a fully charged battery. A low battery will cause all sorts of erratic behavior, ask me how I know!).

The other weak area is the jacks the screen plug into; the contacts aren't a good spring material, and will bend back enough to make intermittent contact. If you're mechanically and electronically inclined, it's not a lot of work to open the case pull the jacks and realign the contacts.

These were the problems with my M1; I don't know if they've been addressed on the M2.

With any chrono, a change in the light intensity can change the speed readings according to the writer in shooting times. This includes Oehler.

Like my ProChrono with the remote. Reliable and consistent. Good price. Durable, too. I shot it twice. Once in the right back corner and it just threw my rounds off target; and the second time I hit a metal strut and flipped it about 6 feet in to the air. Put it back together and it kept on reading. Advice, buy the four-pack of extra metal struts.
