Chrongraphs

I just bought a LED light kit for my Chrony Beta Master. For those who may be interested, I will let you know if it makes it any better when I test it out.

Probably would HAVE to remove a brake or there wouldn't have been any more magneto speed to use :)

Another disadvantage of Magnetospeed for the list I suppose...

So was the group without the magnetospeed fired without the brake as well or did you screw it back on?

I screwed it back on.

Thanks - I just can't see how the vertical can be solely attributed to the magneto in this case - as I would expect both to affect harmonics.

James, good experiment and thank you.General public, what good is a zero deviation, zero extreme spread, zero tolerance, zero everything when the group is bad? This is jumping topic a little ;D But to rely so much on a chronograph is what Hogpatrol shows, very funny by the way.

I have a Pro-Chrono and have checked it against an Ohler 33 and it was dead on. Have made scope adjustments per chrono reading and have found them to be very close if not dead on. Maybe it's a piece of junk but it works for me. Barlow

I use a CED M2. Everything is you need but a tripod. You can even download the data onto your computer. Does all the normal stuff plus more. I've had several chronos over the years but so far like this the best. Here's a description from Sinclair's websight. Hope this helps. Gabe

http://www.sinclairintl.com/shooting-accessories/range-measurement/chronographs/ced-m2-chronograph-prod38189.aspx

The CED M2 Chronograph by Competitive Edge Dynamics has been well respected in the shooting community since 2000. The CED M2 incorporated new technology which has double the operating speed of the chronograph and expanded the operating range from 50 feet per second to 7,000 feet per second. Memory storage has been increased by 500 percent to store over 1,000 velocities. Shot stings can be stored as a single velocity or groups of up to 500 velocities. Five hundred separate strings can be retained in memory. The CED M2 will record velocities at much lower light levels than the previous Millennium chronograph.

Included with the CED M2 is the chronograph, sensors, cables, screen mounting bracket, USB computer interface cable and the new CED Data Collector Software program. All you need to add is a 9 volt battery and tripod to mount the screen bracket. The optional Cordura case stores all the chronograph parts, screens, screen bracket and cables. The case has loops on the outside to attach to your tripod.

Features of the new CED M2 Chronograph System:

Sleek, lightweight, and compact design
Advanced software and digital circuitry
Over 1000 shot capacity with up to 500 string memory
Records velocities from 50 fps to 7,000 fps
Provides High, Low, Average, and Hi-Average velocity readings
Calculates Extreme Spread and Standard Deviation
Edit and omit functions
Built-in calculator
Meter and feet recording
Voice chip technology (results can be heard as well as seen)
USB interface
Data Collector software program included
9-volt battery operation (not included)
Charger is 110 or 220 V compatible

I have shot my hunting rifles up through 338 Lapua with the brakes on them over the Magnetospeed. No issues. I have the CED as well, muzzle blast was always an issue with the CED. I would have the cables strung tight with the tripod as far away as possible to get good readings with the big rifles.

I did the same thing with mine dead on. when comes to err message it had to do with the angle of the sun.

Jeez.....maybe I'm just lucky but most of the time I just unfold my Chrony, turn it on, shoot over top of it and read the speed. It seems that the only time I get errors is if I'm not shooting over the center of the box. The only time I put the sky screens on is if it's a bright clear day.

In using the Magneto-speed with my 6.5x55AI with muzzle brake installed I found that using blue painters tape wrapped twice around the barrel kept the bayonet from slipping.
The chrono is quick & easy to use. As the data from the unit gives es / sd/ and muzzle velocity figures its only used at 100yds after I have shot development loads for group size. The rifle shows promise as several fire forming loads measured .25>.55" using 123gr bullets. I've sent 3 cases to Lee Precision to have custom dies made and the lead time is 1 > 2 months so much time will be spent on the stock to make it look good. When the new dies arrive 140gr Berger Hybrids and 139gr Lapua Scenars will be used.

For what it's worth...a simple solution, Conduct your load developement first achieving the greatest accuracy from the load. Then, you apply what ever brand of measuring device you prefer to establish the speed of the projectile. This measurement is only neccessary when inputting data into some type of ballistic program which will determine the dope neccessary for getting that projectile on target with first strike capability. Too many individuals get caught up in the whole ES and SD syndrome. Continuity in group sizes tells you how well the load performs. Continuity in speed measurement tells you how well you handload each individual round. When it comes to brand preference, it depends on how much time you are willing to spend with that device. Personally, I have tested the Magnetospeed against NECO, ShootingChrony, and Oeler. All give basically equal results depending on how well they are set up. But the Magnetospeed is probably the most effective when it comes to ease of setup and usage and falls within the happy medium of cost effectiveness as well.
