Chop Saw Barrel Shooting

How much legal fees are you in for by the time the atf goes and finds that 4473 where you bought it as a transferred undesignated type action, then goes to the distributor to make sure their 4473 said it was the same on the transfer? Sure you can make a pistol from a rem700, but if that crazy atf agent wants to push it how far can you go to prove it? You put an undesignated action in a rifle stock with a 16.5” barrel and thats a rifle from that moment forward.

I know what I built is perfectly legal. I went over on the specialty pistol forum for the correct info before I started this project.

I'm sure it's comfortable and it looks great but we kinda found having a straighter verticle grip helped a bit. Not so much for any recoil control but repeatability shot to shot.

They say anything about making it a rifle first then a pistol?
No and I could not find anything on the ATF forum that clearly defined it. One answer was that you could not make a pistol out of a rifle. Now, I just got off the phone with my gunsmith/dealer. He said: The 4473 has three categories. Rifle, pistol and other. The action falls into the other. Still have to do the background check etc. I saw references to other on the ATF FAQ sections. I will have to revisit that.

I am in the process now of making it more vertical like my XPs were. There was a lot of meet there. Sanding then shooting until I get it comfortable.

This is one I did using the Savage PTA. Stocks are the hardest thing to come up with for the Savage action.
Nice looking shooter. I spent hours on the net trying to find a stock for the target action. Lot of them out there for the Striker. Found several guys that made a batch and then quit. Found one that said he could make one in 12 weeks. I hate waiting once I start a project. That is how I got into shootings Savages. Simple job to re-barrel, new trigger etc. Where did you get your stock?

This is a question, because I have never gotten a clear understanding for My TC, which was sold as a pistol. Speaking of the OP’s firearm, If the barrel is at least 16” long, and the total length of the firearm is at least 26” long, isn’t it true that it is a rifle and never was a pistol, regardless of the shape of the stock ????????

I ordered a Choate right from Choate. I emailed them to ask if they had any seconds as I was going to saw the butt off. They had one and it was 90 some bucks shipped. I know the price for seconds has gone up a lot since them.

I picked up a brand new Neal Cooper stock for a right hand PTA but that one will be for my next one.

If I was going to look for another specialty pistol stock for the PTA or Striker I would contact Jim Rockwell. Jim has top notch stocks and is a real first class gentleman. I have had the good fortune to actually spent time in the field with Jim shooting in Wyoming. And yes we were shooting specialty pistols.

ARS didn't have one in stock?

I think those are guys that said they can built one. Not all Savage target actions have the same bolt pattern. The one I am working with is on 4.4" bolt centers. I found a lot of photos of the one that will work. Unfortunately they belong to someone else. LOL

Hi, yes that is an ARS chassis. I think that one is the 223. I really like the Ross and Holland style gill brakes. I think this one is an 1 1/4" Holland, works great and adds a bit more weight. The chassis and side panels are hollow so you can add shot to increase weight if desired. He also has wider panels if desired. We keep our barrels under 16", just something we all agreed on long ago and have stuck with it. The 6XC has the wider side plates and currently a cannon style brake I got off Randy. It's the most obnoxious brake I've shot but the gun sits very stable.

We used to shoot midgrip XPs without brakes that really moved around, these new chassis guns just set there so we can easily watch our own shots. Weight is helpful on these LR and ELR pistols. Here is a video comparing my Son shooting a Custom Shop XP 100 in 7/08 to my 260 XP 100 in the very first prototype chassis ARS ever made. Quite an improvement, he's been tweaking his chassis and adding designs and now has chassis for nearly every type of competition and gun.

Yup, that is the aluminum chassis that Randy Wise made. I asked what he'd charge to make me one. He approached Joe Updyke about making a chassis, Randy, Joe and I worked together and came up with the first design and it's blossomed into ARS and chassis for everything.

JD Jones, Blackie and Rosetta Sliva were really impressed with them. We try to have fun. All three of them are legends in the longrange handgun World and I've been blessed to have watched and learned from them over the years.
