Chop Saw Barrel Shooting

Old Navy

Gold $$ Contributor
I have been thinking about building a specialty pistol ever since I quit shooting IHMSA years ago. I had an extra Savage target action, an expendable 6BR used take off barrel and an inexpensive rifle stock to cut in half. I cut the barrel into on my table saw doing the best I could to cut it square. It really got red hot at the end of the cut. You can see it in the photo. It also showed color on the inside of the bore. Since all I was planning on was to see what velocity I would get I didn't care what it did look like. I did clean the burrs out with a counter sink.

I put the barreled action back in the stock, attached a bi-pod and mounted my Golden Eagle. Off to the range. Attached the Magneto Speed and set it on bags at the grip. Bore sighted at 50 and shot a four shot group that went .654" at 100 yards. Go figure. After reading all the treads on crowning on here I was sure this was a fluke. This was enough encouragement though to proceed with cutting the stock in half. Went out this morning with a bag rider on and shot a decent .510" group. Didn't have a good hold on it the first shot and it came back and smacked my shooting glasses pretty good. The next two still went where the first did. Decided to quit and work the grip down more so I can get a grip. My best friend is a gun smith. I am going to have him face the barrel off and put a crown on it and shoot it through the winter.

Did you pattern it off of what Liam Neeson used in Cold Pursuit?
No, these pistols have been around a long time starting with the center grip XP-100 and then the rear grip XP-100R came out in .308 and probably other calibers. I almost got an Antelope with a center grip back around 2000 when I was shooting steel. My XP-100 was chambered in 7mm BR and I wanted to hold it to 300 yards or less. Could never get close enough. Should have had my .270 on the back seat. LOL

Had to look at my calendar to see if it was april 1st.

It was a non designated action From Northland. It also has a 16.5" barrel and is 28" long. I did my homework before starting this project and posting it.

If you are a old IHMSA guy and serious about a specialty pistol take that barrel to a good local guy with a lathe. Have him face off a little and fit a good brake to it like a Holland side discharge.

When I did my PTA, I set the barrel head space and wrapped masking tape around the barrel in three paces. Then with help from my wife using the four holes in the top of the receiver took a straight edge over the center of those holes marking top dead center front to back on the top of the barrel.. Then I sent the barrel and a brake out to be installed.

It takes a brake and a good rifle scope to get the full potential out of these things. Some of the guys are doing milk jugs at a mile with them. I wish we had more discussion on here about them.

He said he used a non-designated Target action. I have a few Longrange pistols built on non-designated target actions, we keep our barrels 16" and under just because. You can run longer barrels and have it in any stock/chassis you want as long as it doesn't have a shouldered stock.

Set up right they are very competitive at longrange matches against the better rifles. I've had no problem even to a mile with the 6x47 and Randy Wise has stretched his out even farther.

We started out with XP100s and pistol scopes and now they've morphed into heavy chassis guns with high end rifle scopes. They are amazing and completely legal using rifle type actions that were sold undersigned and were never sold as a rifle action.

How much legal fees are you in for by the time the atf goes and finds that 4473 where you bought it as a transferred undesignated type action, then goes to the distributor to make sure their 4473 said it was the same on the transfer? Sure you can make a pistol from a rem700, but if that crazy atf agent wants to push it how far can you go to prove it? You put an undesignated action in a rifle stock with a 16.5” barrel and thats a rifle from that moment forward.

Topstrap.

Good to see you stumble along on this one. I'm sure a few more of the guys will check in. Should be a good match coming up in Ohio this summer in the honor of Adam Bender.

Gets confusing, an action that was sold as a rifle can never be made into a pistol but a new undesignated rifle action can be used to build a pistol. That same undesignated action that is a pistol can be put into a rifle stock/chassis but it then becomes a rifle and not supposed to be switched back to pistol configuration.

The Contenders/Encores caused a lot of confusion and I think they came up with some type of ruling on them. A quick call to my buddy that has all my 4473 forms can verify that my LER pistols are designated correctly. We've been using these actions for 14 or so years at matches all over the Country and have never been questioned.

A quick call to Northland for an action to do it correctly and legally is the way to go so there is a paper trail to verify the gun.
