CHEST (PILLOW) PAD LEGAL OR ILLEGAL FOR F-CLASS

I have neck problems. I applied to NRA for a variance to shoot off a wooden wedge while prone. I sent in all my medical info and after a review I was granted the variance. Took a while. My condition has worsened and I have reapplied to shoot off a makeshift bench. Hope it gets approved. Getting old is no fun.

If all else fails, ask the Match Director to allow you to shoot "Out of Competition".
The objective is to continue to shoot, that was the original objective of F class anyway.

I have lower back problems. I found that using a pillow under/across my hips received the pain. Nobody locally seems to care. But is there a difference where said pillow is placed?

Years ago, a local area shooter had to use a rolled up pillow under one side due to some lingering spiral rib fractures that wouldn't heal properly. Nobody seemed to have an issue with that. No NRA or doctor's slip involved.
I don't read the rules as there being any meaningful restriction on what the shooter puts under *themself*. As long as it doesn't affect the support of the rifle, I don't see it being an issue.

I shoot club level F-class and two of us use portable benchs. No one seems to care, at our level of competition. I can lay on the ground but I am crippled for a couple of days after....not worth it. If I become so good that I would want to compete at an NRA sponsored event, I guess I'd deal with the pain

In prone shooting you cannot use any artificial support for your elbows, chest or anything else. You cannot even use 2 mats in International matches unless they are glued together. That would also preclude the use of ground tarps that are common in F-class. Since F-class and sling class rules are very similar in this regard I would definitely ask the NRA and have them declare it legal or not legal and have that available for the next MD that has a question. Local matches are pretty lenient in most cases but when you get to National or International matches you better have your ducks in a row.

Two years ago ; I had Dual By-Pass surgery on both Femoral Arteries . The By-pass hardware had some actual Joints and connectors as part of the devices . I could not lay in a prone position , due to the pressure of the hardware against my abdomen . My ingenious wife created a thin cushion for me out of 1-1/2" foam , and slipped it in two plastic grocery bags . I've used it in the last two SWN's and the F-Class Natls. held at BA . No one has complained , and I haven't heard any objections from the RO's or MD . It's not any kind of support , but padding to alleviate pressure that causes pain on my abdominal area . Think of having two golf Balls on the inside area of your hips , and try shooting that way .
