Checking a Chronograph

I have two chronographs. An old shooting chrony that still works and a new pro chrony digital.

Is there any way I can check these two to see how accurate they are, without using a chronograph from someone else?

I have heard of guys using a 22 rimfire to check, but I don't have any particulars on this.

I would try the two you have together first. Line them up back to back and shoot through both at once. If the read differently, then find someone who has a good chronograph to see if one or both of yours are bad. If they both read the same, id say you are ok.

i have two exact pact chrono models and have lined them up back to back and one read 40 fps faster than the other...personaly i dont know why they were different and truthfully didnt care...not that far off to really matter to me

I use a few rounds of Eley 10X out of an Anschutz if I'm doubting what my Oehler says. Should be just shy of 1,085 fps. Wolf Match Extra or SK Rifle Match would work also at a little under 1,050 fps and they're not as hard on the wallet.

Thanks, I think that will work, but can you tell me what kind of ES you get with those rimfire rounds?

Like Fred, I am not so concerned with a consistent error as I am with an inconsistent error. (something like that....)

Don't have a Beeman. I do have an RWS. Just for the heck of it I will try that also.

I think I will line the two up and shoot what rimfire and pellets I have over both this weekend.

Also, with the two chronographs in series so that you can put each shot through both, establishing the distance from the muzzle to the first chronograph and the short distance between the front and rear chrongraphs, fire one string through them, then switch them so the front one is now back and the back one is now in front and fire a second string. Whether they agree or not after the first string, the results of the second string should be close to the first and the influence of position, if any, will be accounted for or eliminated from the discussion.
