check my math on neck honing sizing die.

I have a new forester f/l sizing die I am not going to run the expander ball and send it into
forester to have the neck honed.
I want 3k neck tension.
My loaded round specs out at 0.2480 if I have them hone it out 4k leaving 1k for spring back
this should give me 3k neck tension does this sound right to you?

3.5 to 4...yes. Do you anneal every firing? If so maybe lesser.. autoloader? If your goal is .003

I confirm the ID of a bushing before sizing followed by measuring the OD of a sized neck, I just do not get spring back of the neck, so it’s either a non issue or I’m the only one that can’t seem to record the phenomenon.

This one batch of brass on this firing may be right. Thats where bushing dies come in
I have 400 rounds of Lapua and they are all pretty consistent in neck wall thick ness
so I thought I would give it a try I have other dies for what ever brass I use
this die would be for just the lapua.

What is the current neck diameter of your die?
Jepp according to forester it is 0.240 but I don't know exactly I don't have a pin gauge in that range
to really check it.
the neck diameter of a resized case with out the expander ball is 0.241
Looks like a .001 spring back if everything checks out.

You may not be setup to do it currently, but you can always use an expander mandrel in a die to reduce your neck tension if you choose in the future without impacting TIR of the case neck. Your 0.244" neck sounds like it will work.

I hone my own die necks and it is always better to slightly undershoot than go over.

Thanks Jepp I appreciate ya!

Don't worry about spring back or anything else. Just measure a sized piece of brass with no bullet, then seat a bullet in the same case and measure. The difference is how many thou of neck tension you currently have. If you need to reduce the amount by honing or whatever, now you should know by how much. Follow me? If this is a 22 cal, you're brass is thin already for a gas gun, imo.

What's case i.d. as fired and FL sized without the expander. If it's accurate I would shoot it as is. Setting the neck tension to some number probably won't improve accuracy. Might improve case life. What size groups are you shooting? What's the rifle used for?

Once you start actually measuring, you'll see that the 'one thou. 'spring back' rule is simply an assumption. Also, not sure what you're measuring with but when measuring round things like necks, a micrometer will give you a better measurement than a caliper. -Al

Thank you it is 22 cal using lapua brass and it is a gas gun.

my groups at 100 yards are 1 to 1/2 inch groups the rifle is used for 100 yard bench rest.

Al thank you I am a old retired engine builder and I have more measuring tools than you can shake a stick at left over from my business.

I see what you are saying I have expander mandrel and makes sense to go smaller and you can always open it up with the mandrel if need to Thank you.
