Cheap ebay thread micrometer

Has anyone picked up the cheaper set of thread micrometers off Ebay. I see a 0 to 1 and a 1 to 2 set together for $150. Would a cheap set be closer than using 3 Wire method?

I've thought about trying one of the cheap .0001" versions. For relative measurements it would probably be fine.

3 wire would probably be about the same unless all instruments were certified.

There's probably a way but even with a gauge it's going to be a relative measurement. If there's an absolute way I'm not sure the cost would be worth it for what we do.

If you do your homework and your needing .0361 size wires and the closest your wire set has is a .0400 so you recalculate your measurement over .0400 are you still on the same accuracy you would be with the .0361?

I've used the shars cheap thread mics and they are fine. They come with a standard and you have to set the anvils with the standard each time you change the anvils. The calibration clamp isn't first class but it isn't bad. It might take you a minute to get it set. But I've always found them to be right on as far as accuracy.

that said, accuracy isn't as important in a thread mic as some other measurements. Look up the thread spec for a thead you're looking to cut and it will have a .003 to .005 acceptable band. Now I like to measure accurately and know what end of the band I'm in, but it isn't absolutely necessary.

There are large errors made juggling the 3 wires...but they are usually large enough you realize you've made an error and redo it.

Another vote for the shars thread mics. I got curious one day and checked them with wires and a regular mic, I was within .001” of each other.
