cheap, accurate single shot .22???

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
What are my options, i`m looking for a cheap single shot .22RF for some gopher control.

I`m thinking about using those sub sonic 22 shorts....

Phil.

Under $200????

I figured the single shot would be cheaper and I could shoot the shorts out of it...

About the best I can recommend from personal experience is a Savage MK II back in 2013. I tweaked the trigger, scrubbed the barrel with JB compound and bedded the action before I ever took it to the range. I then vetted as many kinds of ammo as I could get my hands on using 10 shots at 50 yds from a cleaned dry barrel. Lotta cleaning! Took several days to get through it all. Here's a link to the actual range report thread Link. I tried to be as scientific about it as possible. A handful of ammo types shot IMHO very well, for such an affordable rifle. There were some bad choices as well, mostly being the cheap plinking ammo types.

Here's the net resulting 10-shot, 50 yd groups measured CTC:

T5-4 SK Standard Plus <.422>

The article is a good read with individual target images. IMHO. best bang for buck, easily obtained ammo that doesn't break the bank was the SK+. CCI SV did well also.

Phil, if you're wanting to shoot those sub sonic rounds you are probably going to better off with a bolt action. I really like the "quiet .22" from CCI with a muzzle velocity of about 760 fps. Sounds like an air gun and doesn't spook the varmints. I have used on large rats and such and it's lethal up to 60 yards. Personally, I would scour the used gun racks at the gun stores and for sure the pawn shops. You might be amazed at what you can pick up for very little at a hock shop. Some of these have been just slightly used and were out of an estate that no one new what to do with them. Heck, the hunt is half the fun:)

Look for a used Remington 510,511 or Winchester 67,67a.They run 25in bbl so that will also help reduce sound.I have a 511 that will print mid to high threes. So they are accurate too.
Phil, these are all great rifles. Also the Winchester 69's although they are repeaters and cost a little more. The CCI Quiet and Aguilla Super Colibri's will do the job. The Colibri's are quieter but the Quiet's have a lot more punch and are still pretty quiet.

Try older MOSSBERGS , 42 -44 they shoot shorts , longs ,or long rifle . The store branded ones are less expensive .

I had a 67 Winchesterand that silly thing was really accurate. I now have a 68 and it too is a shooter. the 581 Remingtons are a great rifle. I would haunt the pawn shops and gun shops till I found one of these. My 67 had a long barrel and was noticably quieter than any other 22 I have owned. It shot shorts, but leaded up a bit in the chamber. They are not quieter. I stick with Remington subsonic and find it to be some of the best squirrel/quiet shooting medicine.

The 581 will take a scope, while the 67/68 requires some fancy footwork to mount a scope.

Hoot, my experience parallels yours with the same rifle. SK standard plus. Bought a case of the same lot #. Can't beat it for the money. Thanks for sharing your hard-earned data. Seymour
