Charge vs Chronograph

New reloader for an AR,

I've found it diificult for RCBS 5-0-5 beam and Franklin digital to agree probably 75% of the time. I've also seen what I think of as an excessive (100fps) difference across a 5 shot group. But as stated I'm new and learning.

I just got some Sierra 60 gr bullets (#1375) and will load to Sierra specs. using Varget. 6 charges 3 loads per charge, 18 rounds total.

Am I better off using the beam for the best answer and the digital to look for gross mistakes? I'm not building more than 20-30 at any time and am not in any hurry when I reload.

Thanks, mj52

What's the disagreement look like? Your beam scale is likely to be more reliably accurate than your digital scale, but I wouldn't count on it and if you're within .10 grains you're about as close as you can get without laboratory scales.
I have read some about the "Frankford" Arsenal digital scale but I'm not familiar with the "Franklin" digital scale so I can't speak to it's quality or reliability.

when the first digital available scales came out from Pact i got one. I didnt have alot of money at the time and it fit my budget. I thought man this thing is nice at first. As time went on i thought good gosh, it just flat out would wonder all over the place and never would hold a set with the check weights.. I finally got pissed one day and tossed it in the garbage can with some rather blunt force. Went down to the local gun shop and purchased the Dillon D Terminator. I still use that scale as a back up to my now rather pricy Lab Scale. Back to back testing onthe Dillon showes its right in line with the expensive Lab Scale. Still going strong after 10 years.
Lesson Learned...
I believe you will be better served by the good ole RCBS at this point. .1gr variance is plenty close enough on a gas gun AR. If you like me I had to learn the hard way.... as ussual.

Keep the RCBS 5-0-5 scale and buy some check weights for calibration and peace of mind. And remember Newton laws and gravity never lie, but battery powdered Chinese made scales will.

As stated above the small cheap electronic scales will drift with temp and battery power and the auto shutoff shuts it down at the worst time.

Many of us ran into the same problem. ;)

Chuck the beam and the separate digital. Get one of these and calibrate before each use: http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&prodID=rc98923 Go modern, eliminate the drudgery, and frustration created by separate tools, enjoy reloading.

the beam scale is typically ok for the average reloader.
do not trickle up and just watch the beam..when you add powder, bump the beam and let it resettle.
the average digital $100 or so scale is NOT suitable for reloading...not sensitive enough.
so use the beam for now, and save for a gempro250....less than $125 delivered very good.
( i did post hat i had an issue with mine in the past..discovered it was the rug on the floor..too much static)

the next big step is now 525 ( was 425 a week ago) and then you go over $1000
