Changing a Savage 10 from top feed to detachable mag

I have a model 10 closed bottom . Besides the stock , what would I need in parts ? Is it a lot of trouble ? Thanks , Kenneth

You need bottom metal,it's not a big deal
It's probably 4.4" bolt space

Look up CDI bottom metal. They have all you need, and were offering free installation. Good folks to do business with, too.

Another thing you need to keep in mind when looking for bottom metal for a savage is location of bolt release top or bottom.

Action screw spacing for a short action is important. 4.25 or 4.4 New or old style trigger guard is good info if you buy a stock that is inleted for the DBM . I probably have an silver or a black DBM with a 308 size mag I would be willing to sell that is factory savage if you go that route. Shop around or even post in the classifieds of the various gun or hunting forums.

Kenneth, I have 2 stocks set up with CD I bottom metal and they run great. Jeff at CDI does good fast work and puts out a well made product. Last year I bought a MPA chassis and it rocks. Their chassis for Savage will accommodate 4.27", 4.40 top or bottom bolt release, all in one chassis with the change of a bushing. Just thought I'd mention it.

Ok , I ordered my bottom from Savage Arms . Guess this doesn't mean you get a drop in fit , huh ?
Got it today , holes look to line up ok , but action will not go into bedding block . Recoil lug is binding on the vblock recess . So now I send it off to a smith and have him fit it , since I wouldn't want to try and not get the proper fit .
I would guess they would fit the lug to the vblock and not the other way around ? Asking so when I talk to a smith I can tell if he knows what he's doing .
Should have went with Don's suggestion , ends up not to be the most economical way to go .

Just got done putting a CDi bottom in a factory Savage HS Prec stock, I would not recommend using this bottom metal on anything but a low profile type stock, had to remove the CDi trigger guard and reuse the original otherwise the trigger hits the guard and no room for fingers at the pillar height it needs to function correctly. It would have required .315" material removal on the rear trigger guard mount point, eliminating most of the aluminum and almost all of the original threads, not willing to do that.

Their design is 'short height' and puts the bottom very deep into the stock, with a rather large amount of the bedding block needing removal. Had I of known would have tried a different one.

Personally love the stagger top feed and wouldn't change one over but I'm mostly varminting. The AICS style center feed mags do feed much better with AI type shoulder cases, in my case 6TCU and 223AI.

Will probably end up epoxying the thing in to try to gain some stiffness back, did I mention that a whole bunch of the bedding block is gone to get it to fit?

I live in Florida and my buddy and I went to CDI and had Jeff inlet our stocks. Mine are McMillan A2 and a Bell and Carlson A2. The B&C has an aluminum bedding block in it and in order for the bottom metal to fit properly some of it is milled out. The McMillan is all glass and no pillars. I installed pillars after Jeff milled it for the bottom metal. Neither stock is weak or has a flexing problem.

Ditto this, but mine was in a Choate stock. Rear of trigger guard is so deeply inletted I can't get a finger behind it. CDI alludes to this on their site, but it's pretty vague unless you've seen one prior and had I known I would never have done this, at least for a Savage. I'll attempt to 'extend' the pillars so that the DBM is flush with the stock, but unsure as to feeding issues.

Reusing the old TG is something I hadn't considered, not sure how that's done. Any chance of a pic?

Most Choate stocks have the trigger guard built-in, was this your case?

I just milled off the trigger guard so the original would fit on top of the rear screw for the CDi. For a Choate with integral trigger guard same deal, hack it off and fit it. Pillar height needs to be close to spec for proper feeding.
