Change in direction

First post. After 50 years of mostly hunting I seem to enjoy target shooting more than anything. I love anything tactical, AR15's, 870's, etc. I just sold my Sako A-2 as I haven't deer hunted in years. I'm now thinking about a Sako TRG-22 or Tikka Compact Tactical. I always liked the Rememgton 700's but I hear that quality control suffers. 308 is a must. Still researching optics. Chances are I'll only use my guns for a short time before their passed down to the kids, grandkids and now great grandkids.

This move isn't costing me much. I' need to streemling the gun case so it's like sell 3 guns I no longer use to buy one I will. Maybe one day all my guns will fit into my 12 gun safe.

If any of you have a TRG-22, Tikka or 700, tell me the good and bad.

Big Welcome to the site!

Just hang around here for a while a suggest keeping an open mind on all possibilities.

The choices you mentioned are all good ones for sure, but as you read the stuff posted by many of the best shooters in the country, you may see other choices.

I've had all 3 of the rifles you mentioned, and for factory rifles, the Tikka 595 is hard to beat. JMHO

Best Wishes whatever you do.

You might consider a .260 rem. or the 6.5 Creedmoor. They will both have less wind drift and drop at long range than the .308. The .260 can be had in the Tikka CTR.

Blackdog it sounds like we are near a similar stage in life where its time to enjoy what is left. For tactical you should also consider Accuracy International or a custom. I got a wild hair last year and bought my first custom which is really a joy.

Hey there and welcome to the best site, for shooting accurately, on the net. Sounds like you are where I was 3 years ago, and I got bit by the "target bug". I bought an M1-A(oops), then a Remmy 700 5R 308(great, accurate gun, for a grand), then a GAP-10 in 308 (also a great accurate gun), then a TRG-42, in 300 Win mag(another great accurate gun), then another Remmy 700 in 223, then a heavy barrel Savage, then a DPMS SASS 308, then a heavy barreled 22-250, on a mauser action, then some others and now I'm just starting to shoot a new to me Tikka 595 Master Sporter, 22-250,which is, so far, shooting wonderfully ............ I'm thinking of doing a switch- barrel rig, with the Tikka. A fast twist 22-250 and a 6 br. Did I mention I got bit? I do think the "journey" is a lot of fun, but if you want to save some time and money, i'd suggest a custom in 6br. That's my next gun.

I ended my post for the dinner bell and thought some. The Remmy 5R I have is still one of my favorite guns. I've only heard good things about Tikkas and I like the one I just got. A step up would be the TRG. A step above that would be an AI or Custom. 308 gives you the benefits of long barrel life and lots of ammo choices, or bullet/load choices if you reload. I've been shooting lighter recoiling guns lately cause I find it "easier" on these old bones. .223s, 22-250s and 6.5-55 Swede. I also shoot at least 100 rounds per range session. One other thought for a "tactical target gun" would be the DPMS SASS in 308. Mine shoots great. I also have a STAG AR with a long, heavy, stainless barrel. I think it's the model 6, in .223, that shoots as well as my bolt guns , and keeps ammo cost down. Just some more thoughts, Josh. PS How do you live with a 12 gun safe? Optics at least 32power or higher. My 12-42 NF is my favorite.
