sako trg impressions after first day at the range

I finally saved enough money to purchase a sako trg 22 in 308. I was debating for a while to get it or a custom build. I will say I couldn't be happier.. I loaded 10 rounds each of three different loads my remington 700 likes. These are 2 of the groups from that first day out prone with no real load development. 5 shots at 100 and 3 at 300. O. By the way. I purchased it used..

chevytruck_83: Sako and Tikka make some high quality barrels. I had a new, unfired Tikka 1-10, 308 fitted to one of my Rem. 700SA's and it is one of my top performing barrels. The bore resembles a hand-lapped with not a single reamer or tool mark, not uncommon since they are hammer forged barrels.

First shot from a clean, cold barrel hits the exact point of aim, easy to clean & little or no copper.

Haha. I was planning on running my vortex 4-16 front focal plane scope on this for tactical style shooting. Now I feel like the thick reticle with relatively low magnification may be selling it short.

Forgot to mention. All the 175 smk bullets I shoot are pulled bulk cheapos... i imagine the ones in these groups didn't have much in the way of flaws but worth mentioning.

Not Bad for a Hammer Forged barrel, we always knew these barrels could shoot, all the Parker Hale rifles had these type barrels. dooley

I am really amazed that they shoot so well, as the 2 sako 308 trg's that I checked a couple of years ago needed to have a coal of 3.000" using a 155gr scenar bullet to touch the lands, naturally you can't load a 155gr scenar to this lenght as you would have not enough bullet grip so I loaded them to 2850" leaving a jump of 150 thou, but they still shot way under 1/2" 5 shot groups, maybe hammer forged barrels don't mind a large jump, anyone else checked freebore with there trg's ? also I thought the rifling twist was 1-11. dooley

I havent measured the chamber yet. All I did was run the powder charge my other 308 likes and loaded to standard 308 length.. nor do I intend to. I will for kicks if u would like. yes its a 1x11 twist. Upon reading bryan litz applied ballistics for long-range shooting I noticed the 175 smk are listed as being stabilized by even a 1x12 twist. His book states that a form factor over 1.4 indicates good stability. A 1x11 twist gives 2.33 best case and 1.76 worst case. My experience supports his data. Not that he needs anyone elses support.
