Chambering Problems

Does anyone have any experience with "Small Base Reloading Dies" for 223?

Have been reloading 223s for an AR-15 Bushmaster Varminter and have had problems with reloads for 60gr heads set to 2.250.

Have been using Lee standard 223 dies. Will using the Small Base dies correct the problem.

Problem: bolt will not go to full battery, cartrage gets stuck in chamber, line and groves imprinted on head.

55gr heads set to 2.200 have no problems.

Thanks

BigJim

It is not the dies - you have the bullet seated out too far for YOUR chamber.

Max OAL of the 223 is 2.26" and the rifle should take bullets seated out to 2.250, but apparently yours won't.

It could be due to the shape of the bullet, or a short leade.

Seat them to 2.2", and don't worry.

Thanks CatShooter,I like your tag - I am allergic to cats, so go get them) Now I'll get hundreds of e-mails from PETA,LOL).

I think it is the leade, talked to Lee and they said the same as you, back the power off and set it to 2.200). Also talked to Bushmaster and they claim all are set to 2.260 but it is a 223 chamber. I bought the gun thinking it was 5.56, but no its a 223 chamber - little misleading on their advertising. Not sure I'd buy another Bushmaster.

Still would like to use the longer bullets,87gr) for long range,600m).

You will never be able to use long,80gr) bullets in that chamber.

Load it up with 50s and 55s and have a ball.

Bushmaster is a reputable maker - there may have been a miscommunication somewhere.

You CAN have the throat made longer. Ask Bushmaster, or some 'smith that knows the AR very well.

I know that's what hurts. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the trigger and barrel on it and it does print .5 MOA at 100 yards even with my cheap scope on it. And if I take my time, I can hit the X in the X ring. It is a good gun and neat looking.

I guess I will have to fall back to my favorite - my 243 Savage.

Thanks again

Jim
