Chamber reamer brand question.

Hey guys,

Been a while since I posted last. Anyway,

Ive finally got all my machines ready to run in my shop and im needing to chamber 3 barrels. Ive used PTG in the past ad have had great luck with them. This time however Im wanting to use a different brand, as ive been reading that PTG is realy slow right now.

The 3 chambers Ineed to cut are 6mm br dasher, .284 Win and .338 lapua.

Im looking for top quality and reasonable delivery times. Manson and Clymer are the 2 Ive been looking at most.

Thanks so much for your time,

Jerid

JGS, my last custom reamer was 8 weeks, and it's actually made to spec. If you do a bit more research, you'll find that PTG's problems are hardly limited to slow lead times.

I have a few ooold clymer reamers that work good. Not sure what they do these days. Manson is top shelf but have that goofy circlip holding the pilot on. Jgs is my first choice on many levels- quality, service, knowledge, delivery, actually making a reamer to spec, etc. those 3 are pretty popular and they know what freebores for what bullets etc so theyll come fast. And their reamers work perfect with the whidden dies off the shelf

+1 to what Dusty says, only I don't mind the little clip that Manson uses. The screw that JGS uses is easier, but the clip is not a problem after you figure out the little tricks it takes to get it off.

Thanks for th input guys. I have heard a lot about PTG that's I want to go with different brand this go round. I was speaking to buddy of mine and he wants a new barrel chamber in .338 Lap improved. I'm also considering making my own dies.

Also you you guys know if any of these other reamer grinders offer a tool similar to the PTG uni-throater? It works by using a dealer with zero free bore and then allows you to cut the throat a fraction at a time so you end up with a perfect throat for the bullet you want to shoot?

When I buy for my shop I go strictly JGS. A few more bux, but worth every penny. That being said, one of the best cutting reamers I ever used was a PTG. They are good too, but I prefer JGS.

Bought my last two from Brownells because they had them in stock. Clymers. 223ai and 243 sami. Both are great, and seem to cut better than the ptg ones I have. (May be my imagination tho) Everyone is 3 to 4 months on custom grind reamers tho

Just bought a 338LM reamer to my own specs from PTG. Ordered 12/29/15. Shipped 2/29/16. --Jerry

I bought a PT&G .338 Edge reamer w/ removable pilot. I wasn't a 1" into the body of the chamber when it stalled and refused to cut no matter what I tried. I had to stop there ( I had drilled and then bored just shy of 3/4" to help with wear and to get all started off straight as dialed-in). Went directly to the phone and call Manson Precision, like I should have done to begin with. I had that Dave Manson reamer in 3 days. It took off cutting like you'd expect a good reamer to cut and I completed the chamber without any further problems. Out of the 10 or so reamers I've bought that were made by PT&G (over the past 7 yrs., or so) 6 of them have been 'problems', until I had them resharpened (by someone other than PT&G!). I must be a slow learner to buy that many and still keep buying from them. No more! I question customer supplied reamers made by PT&G. A high persentage of those haven't been problem free, either. Some may claim, "you don't know what you're doing". I will say this,,, I started my machining career in 1974 (back when a computer didn't do your thinkin' for you, and tooling was 'king', and didn't come out of a plastic box). I've worked mostly in job shops, where you are rarely making the same part 2-3 days in a row. I cut my first chamber in 1991 while attending Montgomery Community Colleges' 2 yr gunsmithing program. I don't know everything,,,,,, but it ain't my lack of experience or my set-up! I should have given up on PT&G a long time ago, as when I had problems with the first reamer from them that gave troubles their customer service was non-existent. Funny, I've never had problems with Dave Mansons' or JGS chambering reamers. My tool storage is beginning to overflow with 89 chambering reamers (and growing!). I need to dedicate another drawer to chambering reamers!

I just got a PTG 6br reamer and it took ether 3-4 weeks. I have not cut a chamber with it yet, so not sure about how it cuts. Customer service was OK, but they failed to correct the shipping address when I talked to two separate people after I made a mistake with shipping/billing address. It was my mistake originally, but two people said they would ship to the correct address.

thanks a lot for posti. Your thoughts ans experiences. I stop haven't made up my mind what brand. I do want removable pilot for sure. And would like to order all at the same time.

what do you guys think of reamer stops?

Jerid.

I'm a little out of my element on this thread, but I hope this is of use. I am the owner, not user of several reamers for different cartridges. I only use one gunsmith that a lot of you BR shooters know. He always comments about how smooth my Hugh Hendrickkson {sp} cut. As i said, I am an end user with no machining skills in this area, but I do know what shoots.

Hugh Henriksen's a fine craftsman indeed but last I heard orders can be up to a year to ship... depends if what you want is on the shelf or needs to get on the list.

I ordered a custom JGS very late in December '15, paid a small surcharge for expedited service, had it in two weeks. Otherwise quoted as six weeks.

I use a lot of henriksen reamers. They are top notch. They are pretty much irrelevant in my book tho since im not waiting a year on a reamer as long as the others can cut it. Jgs and mansons cut as good as i need to cut and cut to spec so ill just keep using them

I had exactly the same thing happen with a PTG .284 reamer. Just stopped cutting in the middle of the chamber. Just like hitting a wall. Had to finish with a second reamer. No more PTG reamers for me. Absolute junk. Just sad as they used to make a very good reamer. JGS has been great so far. Great reamers and customer service to match.
