Chamber differences

I would like to have built a 7BR. When I had my 6BR built I was asked if I was using Remington or Lapua brass. Since 7BR brass is hard to come by, I was thinking of using 6BR Lapua brass necked up to 7mm. Will this present a problem with chambering for 7BR? Can I use my Redding type S bushing dies to re-size my necked up 6BR brass in a 7BR chamber?

You will probably have to turn the necks on the Laupua brass as it is much thicker than the Remington brass and I think most reamers are made for the RP brass

Ron,

On the face of it, you should have no problems. The 30 BR that many of us use is simply the 6 BR necked up to 30 cal. 30 cal is, of course, 7.62mm. So, 7mm will be even easier.

The devil is always in the details, though. Depending on the reamer that you use, neck clearance and or resizing of the body might not be great with your die.

There are lots of ways to skin this cat. Which one I depends on what you want to do with the rifle.

I was planning to use this gun for plinking, small game and club matches. But I did not want to do a lot of case prep or neck trimming. Is there such a thing as a match or tight chamber for the 7BR?

Ron, about using the 6BR Redding S bushing die for 7mmBR there is a good chance that the hole in the die body just below the bushing will have to be openned up a bit. If you compare the neck diameter on the 7mm reamer of your choice with the size of the hole in your 6mm die you will see if there is a problem to using the 6BR die as is.

Ok, can I use a set of dies intended for 7BR Remington brass? I had thought about using a 7mm expander to open the neck and then FL size.

You can easily open up that area in the die. My gunsmith, Mike Ezell, built my 30 Major die exactly that way.

You can get a reamer made to be a no turn 7'BR based on necked up 6'BR brass. Not a problem. I suggest that you pick the bullets that you want to use and get the reamer cut so that the freebore allows you to use them all without getting the base down to where the donut might form.

Greg thanks, yesterday I was talking to a gunsmith who suggested I get the reamer from PT&G, which is where I was going to start anyway. My intended use for this rifle is for plinking, club matches and maybe small game, so I was thinking of using 100-140 gr bullets with a 11T barrel at 24" long. Would it be wise to send Dave Kiff a dummy round for him to work off of? Do you think a tight chamber would be a good idea to keep from over working the brass? If I have the FL and sizing dies opened up will I still be able to use them on my 6BR?
