Chamber cast

I was wondering. If you want to know the precise dimensions of your chamber do you need to chamber cast? If not good, but if so what is the best way of doing it? I have read in a fairly old book that you can cast with elemental sulfur and that it should not shrink nor will it stink if you do not heat it up to fast or to much. The other method of casting is using a casting metal.

I just did mine about 2 weeks ago. Real easy. Oil up your barrel and chamber. Block your barrel with a big patch on a cleaning rod, just short of your chamber. Get your gun butt up and pour in the melted cerrosafe. The only trick is to get enough but not too much. Stop pouring, count to 10, and lightly tap it out with the cleaning rod. Wait exactly 1 hour and measure away.

AND -- with the cerrosafe or similar casting metal, be sure to take careful measurements at one hour after casting and log the figures. The casting continues to change after the 1 hour period.

DO NOT over fill the chamber! If you fill the lug recesses, you won't be able to remove your slug. Not a fatal mistake, but a hassle you don't need. jd

"Do you need a chamber cast", No, if the 'your chamber' is referring to my chambers. I do not insist there is 'a way', I will say there is no way to get anything past those that have their minds made-up as in 'it can not be done'.

What does this statement mean relevant to the OP?

I'm not sure what F Guffy is trying to say, but----

I'll say that on one particular rifle I acquired, casting the chamber helped me to learn exactly what I needed to know to successfully and safely reload cases that fit the chamber.

Lacking any cases that had been fired in this chamber, and any measuring instruments that would measure inside dimensions, a chamber casting made it easy. I have since been able to load cartridges that fit well, and shoot well in this very tight custom chamber. jd
