Chamber cast Cerro-Safe

I saw treemans Post about the paper funnel trick . Good tip, any other helpful hints before I melt & pour this stuff into a rifle throat & chamber ? I'm leaving this thing, sm mauser 25/223 assembled. I've only used this Cerro-safe stuff once in a Savage barrel off the action. TIA mike in ct

A light coat of oil can help with release.
Avoid mechanical locks by not pouring too much in.
Cotton ball as a plug , further down the bore than you think you need an inch or so will help with a cleaner chamber cast as the volume will keep everything liquid a bit longer

Wait till you guys see the disaster I call the 25 Goofy. My retirement project. The rough throat is just the start of this headache. I found some odd [rifling looking] impressions in the end of some of my brass cases . & No they are not over-length...more later, mike

I put two oily patches down the bore, and chamber, and I just used patches as a plug. I pour about 1/2-1" in front of the throat. I use a long wood dowel to knock the chamber cast out, catch it in an old towel or other soft material.

Using a "RCBS" lead dipper like you are going to Cast bullets makes things easy.

Trying to take a chamber cast with the barrel on the action takes more than I have patience for.

Only take a chamber cast of a very clean chamber and barrel.

I've used Cerro-Safe to cast chambers with the bolt locked. It allows me to measure dimensions from the bolt face. It's not something that I would recommend to a novice because it's really easy to screw up and jam the bolt closed. Suffice to say you need to use oil or something as a release agent and you have estimate how much Cerro-Safe you need so that it provides a cast just into the lands about an inch or so.

If you cast 4 inchs of bore you will never get it out! a standard heat gun will melt it out of a rifle. it melts at like 200 degrees far lower than any metal or finish. It will be real hard to mess up bad enough to cost you anything but time

Sorry this took so long. I did the chamber cast. I have .302 to .313 Apx. freebore & the throat is .260 is fairly smooth ... This could be, as I suspected: a neck for a 257 Weatherby Magnum . I don't see how I will ever get this rifle to shoot my little short 70 grain gas checked cast bullet. Any useful suggestions please help. mike in ct

Cerrosafe is a pretty amazing stuff. In addition to chamber casting I also use it to cast barrel vise blocks for sporters. Works great and any residual rosin floats right out if I need to melt them down for a chamber cast.
