CFE for 6BR

dood,

Looks like nobody answered this. I used CFE223 in my 6BR when I was testing powders for 80FB Bergers. It, along with many others (322, 8208, Varget, Benchmark) worked pretty well. At the time, tho, powders were getting scarce, so I laid in a supply of LT32 and it's been great with my 68BT Barts. HTH

I only have access to a 200 yd range so I always thought the 100+ grain bullets were a bit overkill. Eventually I settled on the 90g Berger target as my bullet of choice. Bullets.com had them for nearly $100 off for a 1000 count box during their closeout sale so I bought their last two boxes. Having so many of those bullets I sent a dummy round to JGS for a custom reamer. That just arrived and was sent off to Shilen for a Savage prefit. I like using CFE because I just dump into case once my powder drop is set. It's all I've used in a newish Shilen 223AI and there's still not a hint of copper contamination after about 700 rounds. Thanks for the reply.

If the 90s are like the 80s, then they will be of different lengths. I found that by loading the shorter bullets to "touch" the longer bullets would then seat themselves to almost the same OAL. My 8-twist Shilen ratchet rifled barrel LOVED them that way; my last 3 rounds fired on a sighter at a local match went into a 0.077 group, just before I retired the barrel at 2K rounds (not worn out obviously, but I had no idea at the time how many more rounds it had in it). You'll definitely love the Shilen barrel(s). I'm on my 4th, and the last two were both .266 necks and they shot EXACTLY the same load! Both retired at roughly 2K rounds. Good luck and good shooting!

yes I agree. after the break in on the Shilen 223ai, which only took about 10 rounds, I decided Shilen would be my supplier of choice for Savage prefits.

Interesting...I found I liked Criterion better....

I tried to like CFE for 6BR, but the velocity was way off, and the improved cleanup wasn't worth it....to me.

I'm running out of the 107SMK so I thought I'd experiment a little. Rifle is a Savage left port PTA with Sav-2 trigger with 28" Pacnor 7.5t. I looked up the CFE/107 combo on the Hogden page and it said max 30g. Knowing they're usually conservative I loaded 25 cases to 30.5. After setting my powder drop, I dropped directly into case without measuring each individually. Primers were CCI 450s. Obviously no load development at all. Shot off bipod, 200 yards. I think, with some load development, better results are possible. I was getting very slight heavy bolt lift so I'd probably assume 30.5g CFE is max.

contact Greg at Bugholes.com (Southern Precision Rifles) by phone. he will return your call. he should be able to hook you up with a Bartlein for a Savage PTA with a barrel nut installation

that would be for future reference. My custom JGS reamer recently came in and it was sent off to Shilen.
