cerakote

Is Cerakote something I can do at home or does it take something else. Is is like Doracote? and what about the bolt head/lugs how does that get Cerakoted and not mess with the closeing of the bolt or headspace.

CC is right - you can't expect good results with GunKote or CeraKote without blasting the surface,s) you're going to paint first. I've used both products on several of my own & customers' rifles - results are similar, but I feel CeraKote is more durable.

Downsides to CeraKote vs. GunKote -
1. CeraKote's about twice as expensive
2. CeraKote is a 2-part paint & must be mixed in a 24:1 ratio - mix only what you need, as you can't pour the leftovers back into the container
3. CeraKote takes quite a bit longer to dry enough to be handled to be put into the oven
4. CeraKote has a 1yr shelf life, and should be kept refrigerated

Time will tell whether I stick with CeraKote, or ditch it and go back to GunKote. Like I said, CeraKote is more durable, and I like the results I've gotten with it.

Flatlander, you say without having to blast the surface. I was a bit dissapointed to read on the NIC website that blasting is neccessary but you obviously have experience without blasting. How dose it come out without blasting,is the finish long lasting.

Gamma, you're mis-reading what I wrote - I'm saying neither product will work well without blasting. Surface preparation by blasting,GunKote recommends Starblast) IS necessary to get these paints to adhere to the surface.

Cerakote is by far the best coating on the market. Anything I have tested against it pales in comparison to Cerakote.

In every test CerakoteTM out performed both competitors products. All tests were performed in accordance to the ASTM test listed in the photo.
