CCI BR PRIMERS ---- MISFIRING...

I'm saying they are misfiring... but it's probably not the primers.... surely not... probably something else. I have been using cci 200 primers in my 20-250AI, without any problems, but I ran out of them, and bought some BR primers instead. I'm having 2-3 misfires out of every 10 shots... but the firing pin indent is very shallow on them, and even on the ones that do fire.

What else could my problem be...?

The BR primers might have a harder cup.

Is it possible that because of dimensional differences between the two primers, you are seating shorter now & some of the firing pin energy is being taken up moving the primer into contact with the pocket bottom? Remember that the two are manufactured separately, unlike Federals, where the Gold Cup are selected runs of their standard primers, or so I've been told..

I recently had 2 misfires using BR4"s. at a match. CCI techs gave me every excuse other than it could be a bad primer. Had the same firing pin detent as the ones that went off. Went back to plain old Winchester & had no problems.

Hmmm.... but I don't think I had this problem with the cci 200's.... I wish now that I hadn't bought a 1000 round box of them.

If your AI chamber isn't setup correctly, to allow a slight crush when closing the bolt on a standard case, then yes. Was the barrel set back when AI'ed?

You should have a fair amount of resistance in closing the bolt on a loaded round. If it is easy to close the bolt, then you have a headspace problem... the chamber is too long.

From what you have described, that is probably the problem.

Many AI chambers are cut too long, and in the end, drive the owners to drinking.

I hope you have a back up rifle. I bought 3k of the BR-4s this past summer and I've not had any problems. I'd say disassemble the bolt and make sure you don't have something blocking the firing pin from going completely forward. If you seated the bullets well into the lands, that should hold the cartridge head firmly against the bolt face and should take care of any headspace issues while fireforming.

I've heard of problems with BR primers in cold hunting conditions. I would switch to Federal 205 or Rem 7 1/2 for hunting conditions.

Until TUL AMMO came on the market, my most hated primer was the CCI "BR" offering.....among their other products....not to sound like a crank but, I do keep records.

BR4's have a harder cup than most other brands. It doesn't make them bad primers. I have fired thousands of them in .223 through 30BR (and still do) and have never had a misfire. They got a bad reputation with some custom guns because the firing pins were too light to ignite them. If everything else in your loading and sizing is up to snuff, then clean and lube the inside of your bolt and firing pin and make sure it protrudes enough to properly ignite the BR4. Federal and Winchester primers have much softer cups and will seldom have a problem with a light firing pin. In my experience, the consistency of the BR4 is unsurpassed. Happy hunting ...

we had a guy that was 5 relays in on a comp and suddenly no bang....primer had a very light dent. Stripped bolt and checked - no fault found...but still a light strike. He did a dry fire and the click sounded very light...flushed trigger out with solvent and back in business.

The unfired unformed rounds allow the bolt to close rather easy. The newly fired formed cases have a slight contact feel when closing the bolt. The bullets are seated just slightly off the lands, which could be giving it headspace gap. I'll seat the rest of them out a tad to see if that makes a difference....BUT... I only have another 20 or so rounds like this, so I might as well burn them on PDogs tomorrow, and load them up a-fresh.

I believe my other well used rounds did have that crush feel... which is what I was expecting.

I'll use my dependable rounds tomorrow on these coyotes.

I can always go to my Savage 22-243AI which is pushing 80 amaxes at 3550... but I was giving the Savage 20-250AI a head start ... but it's been acting like my ex-wife...LOL.

Just do yourself a favor and just buy some FEDERALS! Never had a misfire with them.
