Cataract lens question

I know I'm coming to the party a little late but why aren't you looking at the multi focals? If you can't afford them, put the surgery off for a year and save up. You only get one chance to do it right.

I had cataract surgery about 6 year ago and did the multi focal lenses. They are awesome.

He said "infinity" starts at about 6 feet, so the distance lens covers a good range. Reading glasses are for close up but what covers the distance between reading distance and 6 feet?

The reticle is physically about 10"-12"? from the eye (don't have one handy so I'm guessing). I've never had to think about this before, so how can you have enough focus adjustment to bring the reticle in focus using a distance lens? Does my question make sense?

What your Doctor is referring to is the depth of field or distance between the nearest and the furthest objects that are in acceptably sharp focus in an image. 6 feet might be optimistic (for me it is about 10 feet) without glasses but I can do anything but read. I've worn glasses since 7, bi-focals from 21 to 25, and progressives since. The current version with 0 correction in the top progressing down to +2.5 in the bottom reading position are more comfortable to use than my older scripts.

As to your question, when you look thru your scope from the eye relief position you are seeing a virtual image of the common plane of the reticle and target image at an apparent distance of several yards. This will put that virtual image within the close acceptable focus of your eye with a distance power interocular lens. You will probably find that when you focus your eyepiece for the sharpest reticle, the adjustment will be very near the 0 diopter setting of your eyepiece.

Interesting thread. I am right eye dominant and was fitted for close up contact in my left eye and distance contact in my right eye. I had no trouble adjusting to the different powers although I was told I might.

Nice for reading books but not so much for shooting and reading wind flags. I have no problem adjusting the reticle for my right eye. Hard time seeing the flag at 100 with my left. Go figure.

I just had mine done yesterday. The Doc recommended distance for both eyes (had one done 2 weeks ago). I don't think I'll need reading glasses except for up close. Anything over about 18" or seems fine - so far.

I had cataract surgery last year and had the distant lenses put in. They gave me 20/25 for distant vision and the state removed the eyeglasses restriction off my drivers license which requires a minimum of 20/40 to pass without corrective lenses. My reading glasses went from 3.25 to 1.75. On my smart phone and computer I increased the size of the print so I normally don't need reading glasses for those. I need no glasses for shooting with the cross hairs focused and the eyepiece adjusted at about the middle position. Another thing was that the doctor told me Medicare would not pay for the multifocal lenses so I would have to pay for the difference between the two.

My husband just did this 2 years ago, and trust me there was a lot of discussion about this before I green light it and did the financeing thing. He was a welder so his eyes went bad early. He chose to get the ones that have both long and near. Pricey but worth it. He figured at 55 he was going to need those eyes a long time so we spent the money. He says it takes a couple months for your brain to figure out its new eyes, but he is glad we did it. Hope this helps.
