Case Volume

There must have been an engineer that has calculated the volume of a case to the SAAMI spec by now. Can someone show me where that is? Thanks

I've found genera listings of CV in several places but they are not spot on. You really have to measure your own. That's one feature I really like about QL as it can be tailored to your specifics.

SAAMI spec is only the outside case dimensions for making a case at the factory so it will chamber. Doesn't consider brass thickness. No spec for thickness. As soon as you fire and size a case the dimensions change. They conform to your chamber and sizing dies.

Nosler is one of the loading manuals which lists H2O volume weight of their tested cases. That gives you an idea of volume, but of course changes depending on sized vs unsized, etc. jd

nosler spec is for the LOT of nosler brass used in the test PERIOD. IT DOES NOT RELATE to any other brass esp once fired brass. it is best to measure YOUR BRASS......if you do not know what quikload is, why are you asking about case volume. it is not a fixed number for a given cartridge. it is a variable
I know what Quick Load and Gordon... RIP is. That wasn't my question. I didn't know his abbreviated English.

The answer to your question is...I have never heard of an engineer going through the trouble...There might be one out there, just never heard of one.

Here is why
You need accurate internal dimensions,
you will notice lot to lot and manufacturer differences in internal capacity
The volume that matters is from a fired case in your rifle

Easiest way, take 10 fired, un-sized, fired pimer still in, weight empty, weight full with water. Differences is your volume in grains of water. (Average those 10 differences)
Do this for every rifle and every lot of cases.

Just some additional info FYI:

As with other manufacturers, here you can see with Peterson brass having various volumes (not fired) and dimensions (note neck wall thickness) that come off their line . .

And here's my little collection of case volumes for my .308 (I always measure my lot of cases myself so I know what I'm dealing with) . . .

Ya I'm sure. I can't seem to get GRT to download it yet. Not sure why. So I was just starting to learn down this tail-chasing OCD habit.

Thanks ya'll for the info to study. I do question the validity of water results due to the fact that water changes volume drastically with temperature. So I would think that water temperature throws another variable into the mix.

Seriously?
How much does the volume of water change from, say 40 F to 90F?

And, yes, it won't work well if the temp is below 32 or above 212.

I just downloaded it and installed it on my laptop away from home with no problems. You have to be registered first.
