I would get the 45/70, pretty popular cartridge for bear. Unfortunately I don't own any lever actions, but if I was to buy a firearm, that would be what I would buy as it's probably out of my skillset to make one.

That said, I saw this site recently, and maybe you would know Josh. Are these kits like buying a machine gun that was cut in half? Seems they don't have the action at all, so not sure what good it would do me...and I sent an email but haven't heard back in a week.

This is the guy's reply to me before I asked about getting a reciever...

I was asking about a Browning BLR lever action kit, but it's gone now.

Where would someone find an action for a Browning BLR ???

I’d say you’re close. I’m inclined to believe this is a resale site for confiscated guns bought from Police Departments across the US. I’ve read a few articles about them. It’s becoming another “anti-gun” issue. The Liberals want to out right destroy ALL confiscated guns. Smart folks want to “recycle” them by selling the parts. It saves energy, resources and lets Police Departments generate a little income.
The lack of receivers being sold is the concession to the Liberals.
They think a gun used in a crime or taken from a criminal is tainted, evil, possessed, whatever they can make up and must be put in the ground.

I just looked thru the site. Anybody missing a Panda bench gun. Damn shame. Looks like they just cut the action in half.

For close range in thick brush, a level action rifle in 30 caliper or greater should be adequate. These rifle handle well in thick cover and mountain terrain.

Here in PA, we have some large black bears, over 500 lbs. One to the largest ever taken was taken with a 30-30 Winchester. Lucky shot? Who knows. But as others said, shot placement is critical along with a heavy bullet that will penetrate to the vitals.

If a bear of a lifetime presents itself, I personally would want a 308-class cartridge which is what I used to hunt bear in PA. The Nosler Partition bullet would be a great choice for bear.

I would not use a 357 magnum in either a pistol or rifle. Simply just not enough penetrating energy.

Have not hunted bear here in Pa for a couple of years now but
I still have a Remington 600 in 350 Remington Magnum, and my
.41 Magnum Black Hawk on my hip. The guy's I hunted with, both
carried Marlin 336's. One in .358 Winchester and the other a .444.
My uncle always carried the old family's 300 Savage 99. All rifles
were open iron sights.

A 1.5-5x20 leupold vx3 makes it easy to shoot both eyes open. I have mowed down tons of jack rabbits with one. Killing stuff at 10 feet is easy. It's light and handy too. Real popular on a lever guns and dangerous game rifles. Any gun suitable for deer should be fine.

Really, the lever actions are only useful to someone that has a usable action already. At some point one should just buy a lever action. People probably buy those overpriced useless parts kits.

I have taken a treed black bear with a .22 Magnum, and 357 Magnum with a 158gr round nose solid point. I have taken a black bear boar I stocked with a. 243 Winchester rifle. I also have killed 3 more black bears over bait with my 25-06AI and 117gr. Nosler Partition and 3 more with a. 270 Winchester and. 130gr. Nosler Partition. The last one came at me on a bluff charge against a full charge of my. 30 RUM. A bit of over kill, one might say or he lost his head trying to scare folks. That's the last one I ever had a desire to take, and I wasn't looking for him at the time. I just always purchased a Sportsmans License which included a bear tag, so when he charged me I took him out.

After further thought, I forgot about an old rifle I have that would be good for this hunt…. When I started hunting I used my grandfather’s remington 760 in 270, took my first few deer with it. We eventually realized the barrel is worn from throat erosion enough that it doesn’t shoot good enough for deer in the open country we hunt in. Sounds like a perfect fit to load some 150 round nose bullets and use open sights. its been sitting so long I didn’t even think of it, but it would be really fun to use that old rifle again.

Black bears are easy to kill. Most of the time the reason that people have issues with them is that they shoot them like they do deer.
A bear has long fur and their lungs sit a bit further back than a deers. So, aim like you would on a deer and then pull it 4” towards the back of the bear. That is the sweet spot.

The 357 lever gun would be just about perfect for a treed bear.

If where heading to the thick timber for black bear, I'd really consider pulling out the 35 Whelen from the depths of the safe.

Levergun: my 1886 Winchester in 50-90. Eight rounds in the tube should be enough.
Single Shot: my Shiloh Sharps, also in 50-90. A half inch diameter hole in the muzzle end would just about scare them to death.
Single Shot Lite: I bought a Miller Arms Farrow action rifle in 348 Winchester.
Bolt rifle: I had a 458 RUM built several years ago. Think necked up 404 Jefferys.
Double rifle: do it in style. Borrow my 10 bore double rifle. 1.6 ounce roundball in front of 240gr of Fg Black Powder. Say "Bang-Bang" as fast as you can.
Revolver: just bought a new Colt Anaconda 44 Magnum with a 6" barrel.

Always have options...
